After starting in 1939 with 8 teams, the ncaa tournament expanded for the first time to 16 teams. UConn played for the first time, losing to St. John’s 63-52 in the first round. Senior Al McGuire had 4 rebounds and an assist for St. John’s. Junior Vince Yokabaskas of Bloomfield scored 22 points with 3 rebounds and 3 assists to lead the Huskies. Junior Bill Ebel added 12 points, junior Wally Widholm had 6 rebounds and sophomore Mel Kleckner of Newington had 4 assists.
7 footer Bill Spivey led Kentucky to its third championship (in four years), and was later accused but never convicted of point shaving.
Should I keep posting UConn ncaa history?

You should have posted that game was at MSG
Pretty much a home game for the Johnie’s
A little trivia the scandal caused a departure of players and coaches as New York City was blamed for the cheating .
For instance the St John’s coach also named McGuire went to North Carolina and won their first NC with a team of NY kids that resembled ealier CCNY teams .
It weakened BB in the NE until the formation of the Big East
I once actually saw Bill Spivey and Ed Roman ( ealier CCNY MVP ) for a Ansonia team
Against
the Milford Chiefs in Shelton
The rumor was Wilt who was in a contract dispute was going to play for chiefs but he was a no show.
The preliminary was of all things a women’s game
Of touring pros Ny v CT
This young girl from Waterbury named Joan Joyce scored 27 for the Connecticut team she was amazing . She was hitting 20 ft J’s .
This was maybe 1957 .

Joan Joyce of course went on to become the greatest pitcher in womens softball history pitching for the Raybesto Bracketts. She lived in Milford on Deerfield Ave during her glory years. She later coached I believe Florida State women’s softball team for many years.
Vince Yakabaskas was active in the UConn Alumni Association thru the early 2000’s.

Joan Joyce was at FAU. She pitched 150 no hitters of which 50 were perfect. Career ERA of 0.09 and had a lifetime BA over .320. And softball was her second favorite sport, basketball was #1. She struck out Ted Williams in an exhibition. She also played on the LPGA and holds the record for least number of putts in a round, 17.
Hell of an athlete

Al McGuire coached Marquette to the 1977 title, the first of 11 for current big east schools
