Over the course of the next few months, I will post some information about referees and how much they worked over the past season. My source was "Women's Basketball State" a website that compiles referee data from downloaded box scores as the season progresses.

The information appears generally accurate, While the NCAA claims 5004 "games or sessions" in Division I last season there are about 5,144 games worth of referees, which should be higher than 5004 to account for 2 game sessions. Unfortunately, within the last couple of weeks most of the box scores for games worked by well known ref Mark Zentz were deleted from the site, I have no idea why. Thankfully, I had just about completed my analysis.

To answer a question I always wondered - there were about 861 referees that worked a Division I game last season. The number is approximate only because, being automated, the site sometimes lists the same ref under either different (mis)spellings or different nicknames (Bob/Robert). 861 is my best number after I corrected all the duplications I could determine.

Here's the "interesting" fact - 621 of them, or 72%, worked less than 20 games. 86, or another 10%, worked between 20 and 35 games. Only 11% worked over 50 games, and only 4% (34) worked 75 games or more (I will "look" at those 34 in greater detail in a future post).

I would guess DeMayo is in the 75 games or more grouping. Wonder where "Bonnie" Bonita will fall? Is there a category for "too many"?

Both are in that grouping.

It is interesting that, if I was "you" posting about Dennis and Bonita, I would have reversed the 2 names, asking if Dennis could be in a "too many" category. Different perspective for different fan bases.

On the whole I think Dennis is a very good ref, except when he does UConn games. I suspect this is an unconscious, or conscious, effort to not show any favoritism to his friend Geno. Bonita, on the other hand, is consistently awful no matter what game she refs. She always seems to be watching a different game than everyone else is watching.

75 or more games a season works out to 15 or more games a month, or 2 to 3 per week. Taking travel into account, that's about the max workload for a ref, IMO.

Um, no. Actually, 4 refs topped the 100 mark. If we exclude the postseason, they worked between 90 and 97 games between November 11 and February 29th. That would be 111 days, actually less 3 days in December when there were no games.

KnightBridgeAZ, in view of this invaluable effort on behalf of wcbb fans everywhere, you are hereby pardoned for the inexcusable crime of being a Rutgers wbb fan. :p
