Down a bunch from last year.
2015 - vs ND 19,510
2016 - vs Syracuse 14,500

Most likely reason -
Syracuse only had 11 fans at the game. The other 17 stayed home.

Alternate reason -
All the other 1 seeds slunk off earlier in the week.

Alternate reason #2 -
UConn has finally ruined WCBB

Where do you find this - and do they list the semi-final attendance?

That can't be correct because Syracuse has 355, largely invisible, fans that attend every game.

Tuesday night does make for tough travel for working folks as well, and while I am sure Indianapolis is a beautiful city, earlier April in the north central section of the country is less appealing as a 'vacation destination' than say New Orleans or other southern locations. Add in the 'localish' teams not being present as well.

I'm sure they expected ND.

Semifinals had 15227

Oregon State vs. Connecticut - Game Summary - April 3, 2016 - ESPN

reasons for low attendance
  • 2 teams from west coast
  • 3rd team with small fan base
  • very large point spreads

A comparison to last year's title game is bound to be unfavorable because none of this year's three newbies has the large, mobile fan base that Notre Dame has.

If Notre Dame hadn't laid an egg before getting to the Final Four, they quite possibly could have broken an attendance record, playing just a couple hours away in Indy.

You are mistaken. There is no There there.:(

what is the stadium capacity?

18,165 for basketball per wikipedia.

It took a bit of effort to find the attendance for the championship game. I finally found it within the New Haven Register article on the game as 14,514.

I'm sure the attendance totals would have been greater if Notre Dame were still in the tournament, as the venue is in their backyard. There were fans from all four programs that wanted to attend, but just could not afford it, or had other prior commitments, like having to go to work. Folks can be a fan at home for free. But to be a fan in the stands (air fare, hotels, food, transportation, souvenirs, spending $$$) can cost a small fortune. A small fortune some folks just don't have. I'm really jealous of the folks that regularly travel with the team on all of their road trips. I'd give a body part to be in that number. :)

Last year, it was the #1 rivalry in WCBB. That was unusually appealing.

It is greatly disappointing that the attendance wasn't better. It did hurt that none of the teams were located anywhere close to Indianapolis, but the local support was paltry.
