I constantly see NCAA fans bashing the NBA about how bad the calls are and "star calls" and all that. I won't disagree that star calls can definitely be a problem in the league, but as someone who watches around 80+NBA games and 50-60+NCAA games a season, the over all quality of officiating in terms of missed calls and phantom calls is much much worse in college basketball. And I say all this as someone who is a major fan of college basketball.

The crew running things today was... awful. Big time blown calls left and right, I think at least one missed shot clock violation and a handful of laughably weak foul calls. It wasn't really the reason for the loss (I think that run where they expanded the lead to 16 effectively ended the game), but it certainly made any chance at staying competitive impossible. This kind of bad officiating is routine in college basketball, whereas you can go bunches of NBA games without seeing anything as embarrassingly bad as what you see in college reffing.

Yea its not even close in terms of officiating, I've never understood why the charge call is called so differently in college than in the NBA. Too many times you see guys sitting under the basket getting charge calls, flopping on some post moves, diving underneath players as they're moving, etc. Obviously guys flop in the NBA and charges are called but its nowhere near as bad as it is in the college game.

I wonder if it has to do with who the "stars" are. In the NBA, it's the players that often develop that rapport. In college, it is usually the coaches. K's players always get the benefit of the doubt. From 2002-2009, UConn's big men always got the benefit of the doubt. Some players get it too (in the Kentucky games I've watched, Davis can't be touched), but usually they are on teams with star coaches. I think that changes the dynamics.
