Quick question. Would you rather UConn make the championship game and lose, or not make the championship game?

Personally, I like that they are 6–0 in the championship game. Other programs of interest have the following records in NC games.

UCLA 11–2
Kentucky 8–4
Kansas 4–6
UNC 6–6
Duke 5–6

Can we stop using UCLA's pre-64 team championships?

They had like 22 to 25 teams in the tourney in the early 70s / late 60s.

They played 4 games to win the Natty back then and the competition.

I would much rather be 6-1 than 6-0.

Think about the women's program. They were 11-0 in national championship games before losing to SC 3 years ago to fall to 11-1. Would it have been better if they lost in the semis to Stanford? No. And maybe losing that game gave Paige Bueckers and Azzi Fudd critical experience and motivation that helped them win this year.

Advancing further is always better.

I’m with Jeter. Only one NCAA team ends their season with a win. Everybody else loses their last game whether that game is in the national final, national semifinal, elite eight, etc. - it’s a loss. Paige and Azzi might’ve been equally inspired by a loss in the regional final or national semifinal.

What if UConn was 6-38 in the national championship game? Would that be better than being 6-0?

But would you rather be 6-0 or 5-6?

The only sport I ever watched that was different was track
I lived near a HS and would walk over and watch a meet occasionally.. I went to a league championship meet .
The kid that finished first in the 100 saw his time and looked a little dejected because is was very fast composite track he didn’t meet his expectations
The kid who placed third was ecstatic as he beat his personal best .
In track it seems you there is competition with yourself that doesn’t really exist in team sports.

It might not be better, but if we were in 44 championship games and won 6 that is some meaty numbers.

Just for the technical aspect, does every conference have a conference tournament now? Probably but when the Big 10 didn’t a bottom dweller could win their last game and not be invited into a post season tournament. I think some conferences now are so big that they do not let their bottom dwellers into their tourney. So that could also be the case where one of those teams ends the season with a win.

But that wasn’t what you were really getting at. Yes, I LOVE the Huskies 18-1 combined finals record but I’d take the extra losses if that was the end result to get to a championship game. Unfortunately like in the Buffalo Bills case you could end up being thought of as losers by many. That’s unfair to say that about a team going to four straight superbowls (but they did get blown out in three of the four).

Reductio ad absurdum! That would obviously be worse, especially if the hypothetical assumes we've already won the 6 titles and go on to lose the next 38 times we're in a title game. That would make the team a laughingstock like the Bills were for many years.

A more serious question is whether we'd now rather be 6-4 than 6-0 and I think the answer is obviously yes. That means, among other possibilities that, we didn't lose to Florida in '94 and/or UCLA in 1995 and/or Mississippi State in '96 and/or GMU in 2006 and/or Michigan State in 2009 and/or Florida in 2025 -- and instead made it to the Finals 4 more times than we have.

Going forward, I'd rather win 2 and lose 2 than just win 2.

It's insane that we're 6-0 and I'd love to remain undefeated in title games, but I'd like to be super competitive every single season, and if being a national title contender every single year means some title game heartbreak, so be it.

As for the notion that every loss is the same, that's truly ridiculous. This program had a gigantic monkey on its back before it made its first Final Four. And the only thing that we lack compared to the other top programs is Elite 8s and Final 4s. Obviously those are exponentially less important than titles but they are still very important factors that people use when determining a program's place in history.

One other note to add: MCBB is not MLB. In MLB, you have 30 teams, a handful of which have a relatively gigantic payroll, and there are fewer rounds to get through. In MCBB, it's a gauntlet. Some people don't seem to appreciate how difficult winning titles back to back -- with two different rosters -- was.

Would you rather lose the Super Bowl or not make the playoffs? Seems obvious.

I'll answer like this, it's most painful to lose in a championship because it's supposed to be. They call it the road to the FF or the road to the Super Bowl in whatever city the superbowl is held in.

The Bills can say they at least made the Super Bowl, ask Cris Carter and the 15-1 Vikings if they would've preferred losing in the Super Bowl.

If anyone believes getting eliminated early is a better outcome than getting eliminated in the title game, I don't know what to tell them.

One team wins the title game, everyone else lost. It then becomes a question of how far from the finish line it was when the world found out that you weren't good enough. My belief is if I don't make it to the finish line, I want to be as close to it as possible before keeling over.

The most important number is the first one.

If those are equal, then I want a higher number for the second one.

This a very well written post. Some great points.

I want to win every game. That means the best outcome is to win the title game. The next best outcome is to win in the F4 and then lose the title game. The next best outcome is to win the E8 and then lose in the F4, etc etc

If we make the next 5 title games and lose them all, our tournament record in those 5 years is 25-5

If we don’t make the tournament at all for those 5 years, our title game record is still 6-0, but we suck

Exactly. It's great being undefeated in the Finals but I don't want to keep the record because they never made it back to the Finals.

I think I agree with you.

First of all, as a track dad of three kids, THANK YOU for attending some meets. It means a lot to the kids to see non-parent fans. Second, I totally agree. My daughter's best meet was her final one as a senior. She finished in last place, but she was ecstatic because she beat her best time.

Make the championship game and play to win.

If you lose in the semifinals the season is still ending with a loss.

Looking at you figures even though the 6 - 0 is impressive I would much rather be 11 -2.

not sure what your point is. Of course 6-0 because that is two more championships.

I would also rather have UCONN be 10 -10 because that is ten championships rather than 6.

Ironically, you could make a good argument that the reason Duke has lost six times in the NC game is because they recruit too many of the best high school players! (Experience more often than not prevails over one-and-doneness in the Final Four.)
