As a Pirate fan that hurt. The damage was done by Jim Leyland though starting in game 6.

Started Doug Drabek who is slightly hurt. Why??? If they win game 6 he will be the starting pitcher in the WS. If not you have him a little bit healthier for game 7. He pitched great but was outdueled and lost.

Game 7. Bream on first. Bring in Bob Walk (who ironically has good control)? Nope. It’s John Smyly who immediately walks the winning run to second setting up the weak single to left that won the game.

And then you have 1 for 200 with men in scoring position Bonds who refused to take any blame by stating he is just one of 25 players on the team. He was a major bust in every Pirate playoff series.
 
While not a Pacers fan, watching Reggie Miller shred the Knicks for 8 points in 9 seconds with a Knicks fan next to me was a highlight I won't forget

With Canelo vs. Crawford coming up this weekend I am reminded of Bud vs. Porter in 2021. While not a "trademark" fight in the sense it did not catapult Crawford to stardom as he was already a star, it did show everybody Crawford has that dog in him.

Between the 9th and 10th rounds Bud was told he was losing the fight. He proceeded to come out and stop Porter in the 10th, the only time Porter was stopped in his career.

As a Pirate fan, it's going to hurt quite a bit when a generational pitcher like Skenes takes off for a big market.

Met's fan but I loved those late 80's A's teams as a kid. To this day, still think they are the coolest MLB team I've ever seen. So many great personalities & favorite uni's in the sport. I remember waking up at 7:19 to catch Van Orel Wright on CNN sports updates to find out if Henderson stole a base or whether Canseco or McGwire hit a homer the previous night. Watching that Dodger team and Herchiser mow them down stung.

Well that’s a given so not really. They aren’t trying to win in Pittsburgh. I just hope he goes to a good family.

You can't do that. In the bottom of the 9th with runners on base you just can't take a called strike on a full count.

I'll never forget that game. They had a good team and we haven't been in that position since.

Here's the thing... the Pirates will have all the pieces in place to have a 100+ win season in 2027.

And it's almost certain MLB will be on strike in 2027.

That is like the most Pirate-y thing ever.

So the question is whether the Pirates trade Skenes after 2027 when he still has two years of control, or after 2028 so they can make a run at the division, but lose some value.

Skenes will make $80-$90 million during the next 4 years. An extension that pays him $180 million thru his age 29 season (6 years, buying out 2 FA years) is something the Pirates actually could do, given the status of the rest of the roster being mostly all pre-arb and arb guys during that timespan. There's really no reason Skenes wouldn't take that, as it's essentially $50 million per year for the final two years.

I think it was the theater of the entire thing that made it an iconic moment. Joe Buck's call definitely helped add to it. Gibson got hurt in the NLCS and wasn't expected to play in the World Series. Eckersley was absolutely dominant that season. 2 outs bottom of the 9th he comes in to pinch hit. Whether it was the first game or the 7th game it was still the World Series. And then I don't think Gibson had another at bat during the Series.
