Coming up from NC to CT for an event in October and looking for a cheap place to stay near Norwich. Found good rates at the Red Roof Inn in Mystic-is Mystic an okay place to stay? Looks like it's only a 10-15 minute drive? Will be me,my wife, and our two young kids. Hoping to drive to Storrs one day!

La Quinta in North Stonington is a good place for the money, off the highway, take route 2 to Norwich. Also close to Westerly.

From my house in Norwich, it is a 30 minute drive to Mystic.

Mystic is good place to stay - aquarium & seaport good for kids. But Red Roof is in New London - closer to Norwich (20 minutes) and ok for adults. Would suggest Holiday Inn in Mystic. A little more expensive (~$100 a night) and and 25 minutes to Norwich, but has indoor pool and is close to the Mystic attractions.

Thank you everyone for suggestions and help. Apparently the coolest event ever is going on the 6th-9th because most of them are booked or double their normal rates!

I stay at Hilton properties (just booked the Hilton Garden Inn @ Preston for Friday) and noticed that they just opened the Hampton Inn Norwich, 2.5 miles from Norwich. Since it is new, it probably isn't as booked as other places in the area. Might give that a try.

If you want cheap, there is a Holiday Inn Express by the Norwich exit off of 395. Used to be a Ramada when I lived in the condos nearby.

Also used to be a Sheraton in 1973. How do I know? I was the head bartender (short-term gig after graduating from UConn and then Duke Antone's School of Mixology, Farmington Ave., Hartford).

My most famous customer was Steve Kuberski, last Celtic to wear #33 before Larry Bird.

Other than being smack dab in some of CT's typically best weather, some AARP members headed to northern New England's prime foliage season likely pit stop in Mystic.

Been in the area (Mystic) a lot. Hyatt and Hyatt are very nice, but pricey. Most of others are iffffyyy, except Comfy Inn. I'd say stay there. The Inn at Mystic is also ok - AND you could even get the room that Bogy /Bacall had for their honeymoon suite!!

Sheraton in Norwich not so hot. There's always Mohike Sun in Norwich.

Be sure to visit BF Clyde's Cider Mill in Old Mystic and get the HARD cider.

Thanks again everyone for the help-we got the hotel situation taken care of. Going to go to Storrs on Sunday to visit the campus. Been a fan since I was like 15 but never been on Campus! What do you recommend seeing, besides the Dairy Bar (that will keep the kids happy)!

I know his hotel is settled but my wife and I had nothing to do so we 'slummed' it and stayed at the Thames Inn. Linky

It was in early Sept last year and all we wanted was a clean room to sleep. We were going to fart around Mystic and the Casinos and was not going to stay in the room.

The manager was cool and said we could check out at 5pm or so. We then went to both casinos, toured Mystic, and said by the river (me with my Cigar and her with a book).

The price was 70 bucks (not that it mattered) but we spent the savings shopping around town. Came back took a nap then left out for the Casino before trekking back to Southern CT. For overnight trips I just have a simple requirement of clean rooms/bed and decent location.

Gampel and the Co-op obviously. They are right next door to each other. You can take a look at the Werthe Basketball Center and the Burton and Shenkman (Football) buildings while you are there as as well. Be sure to rub Jonathan's nose outside of Gampel.

There is a sports museum in the Alumni building, that is worth a look but boring for the kids.

I'd head down Mirror and Swan Lake. I think Mirror lake has a swing there. It's a nice picture.

By the Dairy Bar you can check out the view by Horsebarn Hill and check out the horses, sheep and cows as well. I think milking is done in the afternoon.

There may be more now but at the corner of Eagleville Road and Storrs Road the UConn sign is a good picture.

The Student Union has good energy and is worth a walk through.

There's more but those are the things that come to mind.

And Blaze Pizza, of course. There's a famous table to the right when you walk in where Chief and associate head coach Raphael Chillious shared a pie and set the wheels in motion for the return to prominence of the UConn men's basketball program.

This... Stayed here quite a bit when I was gigging around the area. Cheap, clean, edible free breakfast, and everyone there is very nice. Sign up for their rewards and look for codes; you can save a bundle on an already fair rate.

Thanks again everyone-great info here. And yes-a picture at Blaze would be huge. Where UConn was reborn!

Had a blast visiting the campus! Got some good new gear at the bookstore, walked through student union, visited the Jonathan statue, and even had a football player let us in the Burton facility which was nice! Enjoyed the Dairy Bar too much and visited the cows. Question on the statue though-my 4 year old rubbed its nose but my 2 year old picked its nose-good for mojo???? Only bad part of the trip was flying home from NYC-after three cancelled flights we rented a car and drove through the night home to NC
