My next door neighbor is a highly respected women's bb official,

who has done the final four, DII, a couple of times. He told me today that there will be an increased emphasis this season on diminishing the amount of physicality in the women's game, in hopes of returning the game to something more free flowing. everything from hand-checking ball handlers( one measuring -up hand check will be allowed) to beating up on post players,even offensive moves involving hooking the defender with an arm, will be called. He , of course, expects there to be parades to the foul line early on, but as teams see players going to the bench in foul trouble the hope is that the game will open up. Sort of the way the game used to look back in the 80's and 90's. It would be wonderful if it happens. He said that , starting Friday, when he does the Bryant-Harvard game, that's how he expects to be doing the job.

knowing him, and having watched him officiate, i expect that he will make the calls. but re officials in general, i also will believe it when i see it happening.

If they don't slow down all the heavy contact clutching and grabbing, it will look like NBA play in the near future, and I/ we could lose what we've come to love. My 2cents anyway.i told this to ??? The head of women's officiating and the head of NCAA womens basketball when all the "pubas" had a forum at the XL center last yr during the Big East Tmt.

I heard the same thing from a men's coach last Friday night. He added that he's heard that before and will see how long they stick to it. Said that the NCAA has done this before but by March it always goes back to the same old same old.

The simplest solution is to blow the whistle on the holding and grabbing. It is clearly outside the rules. Very time you see a shirt grabbed or an arm held blow it. It is likely the easiest behavior to see and to change without excess dependence on interpretation. Start there.

another thing this neighbor of mine mentioned is that they are expected to make more calls on body contact made as, or after , a defender blocks a shot. if, in fact, the offensive players are allowed more movement, and with the 10 second rule in effect, we could see an up-tempo game , with lots more scoring. these players are so athletic that, given some room to work, the game would be so much more entertaining. coaches everywhere should be solidly behind this, as attendance is badly in need of a jolt. and this can't be anything but helpful.

Tina, also, used it regularly. Technically, you can use it to isolate your opponent behind you but not to drag them behind you physically pulling them with your elbow.

If they control and minimize contact at the basket with foul calls we will see more foul shots for teams, including UCONN and we'll see shooting percentages for Stef, Kiah, and Morgan go up in the post. The good news defensively for UCONN Is Stef uses excellent form straight up in the low post and Breanna doesn't need to get near players to block shots with her length.

I just spoke to Anucha Browne for tomorrow's Dishin & Swishin podcast, and she also said the officials have been told to get the physicality dialed down. This will mean excess whistles initially as everyone adjusts.

just spoke to my neighbor, the ref , regarding how it went in his first 2 exhibitions . in the D1 game it was clear to him that the coaches and teams had bought into the changes. there was little extra handchecking, cutters were not "chucked" as they made their cuts, and post play was cleaner. after having called defenders for body fouls while in the process of clean blocks, the defenders seemed to adjust. he thought that the offenses definitely ran more freely and smoothly. he also did a D3 game, and did not find that the teams were as prepared. still a lots of illegal hand checks and bodies on shooters during blocks. in both games players setting screens were staying still. oh, and he mentioned one big player who came down on offense and "ran into" defenders to make space. after getting called 3 times, she began to get the idea.
