MW/T.Hayes

You're right. We should be looking at ourselves. Did we do all we could to create the right mojo for the game? Did we wear the right shirt? Did we eat the right meal? Did we sit in the right seat? Did we wear our lucky socks? We can be just as culpable as the players, probably more so. Let's stop berating the players and coaches and start berating each other.

The poverty of theory/selves. I have never figured out why sports/games and childishness go hand in hand for far too many. But each to his/her own.

I have always felt that unless you can beat a player 1 on 1 then you shouldn't criticize. Unless you've won games with comparable tensions, you shouldn't criticize a player. Observations are one thing. The is a difference between an observation and a criticism. To say a player needs to be more aggressive is an observation. To say a player disappeared, indicating a lack of intestinal fortitude, is a criticism. Too build a player up is an observation; to tear one down is a criticism.

I'm 72 years old and I still think of the missed shots more often then the made shots. These things will stay with these 20 year old players for their entire lives and they really don't need us inflating our over the hill egos by criticizing their efforts.

Is MW going to be another Tiffany Hayes? Shine against average teams and not show up in big games.I still remember Maya not getting her 3rd ring because TH was a no show in big games when she needed her the most. That being said MW has made great strides from non existent to OK to this season being.a very good player. However to be an AA she needs to be there in big games. With the great improvement she's shown this year maybe she'll take that next step her senior year when she will have some more help
The 2010-11 UCONN team lost 2 games so these must be the big game you are referring to. In the Stanford loss not only did Tiff not show up but Maya did not show up. In the final game against ND the entire team sans Maya did not show up. Why pick on Tiff?

I remember getting a lot of flack here when I mentioned Hayes missing the bus for that game. Moore had 30+ and Hayes disappeared.
I remember the entire team disappearing sans Maya. The Dolson/Hartley team would have continued to disappear until the GOAT, Stewart, was recruited.

(trying to inject some levity into the moment)

I will just add, I found Hayes frustrating to watch in general. Never in my life have I seen a player make so many off-balance and out-of-control drives that end on the floor. I remember thinking to myself, this girl must have an inner ear problem or a hidden ambition as a stuntwoman lol
And how did Dolson and Hartley play?

You should probably stop reading the comments on this board. You know they will not all be positive. Even Geno makes negative comments about his players. All the negative ones are not incorrect. What is the board for if not for opinions, even those with which you don't agree.
Donald- The average WNBA Career is 3 years and Tiffany will be in her 9th year of which most were as a starter. Let's keep it informed huh ?

Well that's seems fairly simple. Games, children, seem like they would go together quite easily.

I believe the UConn fans who were not satisfied with T. Hayes don't care about her WNBA career or how well she is doing now. I know I was complaining about her junior year at UConn. I usually stop following a player after they leave college.

I prefer to remember games like the one Tiffany had against Louisville as a freshman.
Freshman Hayes dropped 6 3pointers on Louisville that night if I remember correctly. Louisville had to leave someone open because they concentrated on Maya Moore. Tiff was left open and just kept dropping 3's.

Not sure I understand the facts that caused this comparison. Hayes had the best player in the country, Moore, as a teammate who drew the best defenders. Walker is playing out of position as a power forward and has lead the team in scoring since the beginning of the year. Best defender usually on her. True, she has had 2 poor games but had many more when the games were close and she bailed UConn out. Focusing on 2 games her junior year seems a bit of cherry picking.

Wasn't Hayes the player who Geno assigned to guard the best opponent? Maybe she wasn't the best scorer but I remember her shutting down a lot of stars, something that UConn could use this year.

To begin with, Tiffany Hayes did not come in with the same portfolio as Megan Walker. Walker was not only a five star prospect, she was the number one rated player on Hoopgurlz. Secondly, Hayes was not recruited strictly as a shooter. She was more of an all around player, a decent ball handler, rebounded, and shooter. She was not Maya Moore and never tried to be. While Megan came in with a lot more fanfare I can never remember her actually seeking the footlights. She is a very good player who is trying to get the best out of her ability and I don't think we can ask for more than that.

The stats say Meg's offensive role this year is much more similar to Maya Moore's, specifically in 2010-11. First, Meg averages 35 minutes per game while Maya averaged 33. Meg averages 15.8 fg attempts per game compared to Maya's 16.7. Meg attempts 5.1 three pointers per game, Maya averaged 4.66. Meg's offensive usage % is 27.7 vs Maya's 31.6.* Meg averages 3.4 free throw attempts per game, while Maya averaged 4.1.
Even their rebounding numbers are similar: Meg averages 8.9 rebounds per game; Maya averaged 8.2.
Meg is arguably as important to this team on offense, and is asked to contribute nearly as much on offense as Maya was in the 2010-11 season.

*usage % is an estimate of all possessions that end in the player taking a shot, turning the ball over, or getting to the free throw line

To be honest, Williams reminds me more with her out of control drives....

Tiffany was way tougher. She was a bulldog. Walker is a good finesse player. Good touch from outside (recall better than Hayes). But Tiffany was a brawler. Always was. Still is.
