Mulkey Diagnosed With Bell's Palsy [merged]

As someone who is dealing with swollen nerve issues myself (in my case optic nerves) I'm well aware how suddenly the problem can emerge and how difficult and unpredictable treatment can be. My best wishes to Kim and hope that hers is one of the cases that responds readily to treatment.
 
It's a real pain and sometimes a mis-diagnosis for something worse, but usually!!! if correctly diagnosed, she won't look great but she'll be able to function and by next season will be a distant memory.
 
wow, this is really scary. I guess my question is, can it be cured? I wish Mulkey the best of luck.

Best wishes for KM, hopefully this is one of those things that responds well and is gone soon!! And I also hope it's not symptomatic of anything more serious. I'm sure she can't believe the timing either ...
 
Says most cases go away in a few weeks - gotta believe.
 
Knowing Mulkey, she will find a way to use this to motivate her players.
 
I had Bell'sP as a result of Lyme disease. The most successful course of action for me, was accupuncture. After each accu treatment the improvement was dramatically noticable. The good news was, that the needles, in a face with no feeling, did not hurt. Even with the treatments it took me over 4 months to get to 90%. This happened in 2005, and I still have times when I can't whistle, or when I'm tired - my eyelid will droop.

It was embarrassing for me to just go to work or to the store - I feel bad for Kim that she has to go to the FF like this ----but then she could just wear one of her outlandish outfits.....and maybe no one will notice.
 
baylor has one of the best teaching hospitals in the world and she is getting it at the onset. Our prayers are with you Kim.....It could not wait a week?......God Bless!!

Ironically, she will be OK, but it won't look like it. I know two people who had it years ago; both felt fine after a bit but looked as though they'd had a stroke. It's like CalifHusky said.
 
It is believed to be caused by a virus. I demand to know which opposing team has stooped to such lows as to put something in her food or water.
 
I was diagnosed with Bell's Palsy in Aug 2010. I still don't have full range of motion with the right side of my face. And it took months to get those types of results. Went on steroids immediately, but didn't get the anti-viral until 6 weeks in. Saw a facial therapist for 3 months, which helped, but most of my recovery has been on my own and VERY SLOW. This disease sucks and I wouldn't wish it on anyone, but it certainly isn't painful or life-threatening (although everyone thought I was having a stroke - due to the paralysis). Like Kim, my first symptom was Day 1: a strange tongue sensation, followed by loss of taste, then Day 2: shooting pains on the right side of my face along with a tingling sensation followed by Day 3: total paralysis of the right side of my face and major acial drooping. Doctors never figured out what caused it since I was feeling overly stressed in any way, didn't have Lyme disease, or Hepatitis. Best of luck and a FULL, speedy recovery for Coach Mulkey!!!!!

Wondering if anyone knows how effective Accupuncture would be this far removed from initial occurance? as far as gaining full range of motion back in the right side of my face.

On a side note:
I will say that I believe everything happens for a reason because at the time I had just started my new job and I was a week away from reaching my 90 days where my health insurance would have kicked in and my college insurance had just end the week prior, so I was in the 2 week period of having NO insurance when this all occurred therefore I didn't go to the ER (which I now regret) because of the costs and instead went to a walk-in clinic and paid $100 out of pocket (another regret) and still to this day have the after effects of the Bell's Palsy -- should have seen a highly-paid professional and I would likely be fully cured by now (IMO). 6 months later I noticed a lump on my body and got scared and had it ckecked immediately as a precaution (had insurance, thankfully) and it turned out to be Seminoma Stage 1A Testicular cancer and I had surgery the following afternoon to have it removed. Anyway, my point is that had I not been mad at myself for handling my Bell's Palsy wrong or it never happened, I might have put of noticing the lump. And my doctor says I have a 98.5% non-reoccurance rate because we caught it at Stage 1A and I had 2 chemo treatments (will still have to have CT scans once a year for 5 years to monitor the situation).
 
Thanks for sharing that. I have been through multiple medical situations as well, one of which nearly cost me my right leg. After 5 surgeries and a year of having trouble walking and being in severe pain I am finally starting to feel normal again.

Early detection and taking quick action is sooooo important when it comes to health issues . KM is fortunate to have access to such great medical resources.
 
Thank goodness she took time to go to the doctor during this beyond busy week for her! Relieved to hear that BP responds to treatment.

In the meantime, I think Kim would look great in a pair of gold-trimmed, green-tinted glasses on the sidelines!

OMG I hope this doesn't mean no gold jacket on the court. The finals will not be as entertaining if that happens.
 
My 18 year old daughter has type 1 diabetes and every so often will have a seizure in the middle of the night. One morning I walked into her room to a horrible sight - the entire left side of her face looked as though it had melted and she had difficulty speaking because of it. Her doctor confirmed that she had suffered a Bell's Palsy reaction brought on by a diabetic seizure - I was terrified! Odd thing was, we never had to start medication because within 2 hours it completely cleared away on its own with no lingering side effects...thank God! But most bizarre just the same. I did some research and found out that every case of Bell's Palsy is slightly different and some can last forever or can also be brief just as my daughter's was. If I know KM, this is going to be a temporary set back as she is just to feisty to let something like this take over long-term!
 
Just talked to my bro-in-law who is a family doc up in Mass. He says he sees it often and up here the number one cause is Lyme disease. Don't know where Mulkey has been, but at least Lyme is treatable. Wish her well...
 
I contracted Ramsay-Hunt Syndrome, which is caused by the shingles/chickenpox virus and is similar to Bells Palsy except it also attacks the nerve tissue of the inner ear, at the beginning of Feb of last year. It, in turn, triggered Guillain-Barre Syndrone, which advanced in the form of paralysis to my right vocal chords and throat muscles, and some neuropathy to other portions of my body. I lost over 35 pounds before 15 units of imuno-globin, physical and speech therepy turned it around. 14 months later I still have minor paralysis on the right side of my face, some vertigo, am partially deaf and lack the the energy to drive more than about 30 miles in traffic. It ain't exactly your common cold.

It looks like Kim caught it in time to prevent any further complications. I certainly hope so.
 
You guys are to be commended for keeping this thread between the lines of care. Unfortunately we have two Big 12 school boards that take personal shots of the demeaning kind.

Keepin it classy seems to be much more your style.

How could people who call themselves WCBB fans, and are old enough to remember that skinny kid with the racing around the floor with that big braid flopping around, ever demean Kim? She was the one who got me interested in WCBB. I believe it was the first nationally televised NCAA women's championship game and she was the star. We do, however, like to rag on her a bit about her wardrobe selection. What the hell, we're not perfect.

I have had parishioners affected by Bells Palsy which to my understanding has several causes which respond to different treatment paths. Some reverse quickly some very slowly and only partially. Much of what has been posted sounds exactly like that.

Most important is blessings to KM for a quick and rapid recovery.

As I wrote in an above post - I has BP2005 and did use accu . Over the years I would go back to my accu (Karen Borlan - KwanQinHealing - WestHartford) for a quick lift, whenever I felt like the muscles were drooping - this always worked for me. I don't know if you live in CT, at the time I lived up by the Mass border and it was a haul to WestHart, but Karen was very good and worth the trip. When I got BP it was a Dr that suggested Karen to me.

Good luck with successfully eliminating the cancer.....keep up the good work.

Yukon, I had never heard of that. My brother passed from Type I diabetes and I also battle this horrific disease. I contracted a staph infection in my right leg last year that nearly resulted in amputation. I will have to ask my endocrinologist about the link between diabetes and BP. Thanks for the heads-up.

Leave her wardrobe alone. She shops at the finest Las Vegas shops.

Like Dolly Parton said "it takes a lot of money to look this cheap."
 
My step-son had a BP episode about a year ago. They put him on steroids and it cleared up in a 2-3 weeks. He had to wear an eye-patch for a bit because his one eye wouldn't close. We teased him, but we're that way. :cool:
