The Notre Dame-UConn rivalry, now the most intense the sport has to offer, continues in the Jimmy V Women's Classic in Storrs on Dec. 5. It will match the teams that have played for the national championship in the past two seasons.

Notre Dame coach Muffet McGraw wants a yearly renewal of the rivalry, one which has been in the nonconference format since the Irish moved to the ACC three seasons ago.

"Yes, it's something I want," McGraw said. "I think [UConn and Notre Dame] are interested in it. It's a good game for us, a good game for women's basketball. People enjoy it and I would continue to like playing it before the conference season starts. In my mind, we are going to keep playing."

It appears that Muffet has no plans of dousing the flames on the hottest rivalry in WCBB:
This game is always the hottest ticket in town. It 's a great rivalry game that goes way back. It's always televised nationally, and is a good barometer for each team to measure their progress before conference play begins.

She means, "the hottest ticket until February 8th in Columbia".
The South Carolina isn't even close! No Comparison! Unless Notre Dame all of a sudden starts stinking the joint out, it'll never compare to the Irish playing the Huskies!

I would continue to like playing it before the conference season starts

Reading between the lines I would think that ESPN would like to schedule this game for after the football season is over.

Unfortunately for SC, the rivalry is UCONN versus ND. It is the hotest ticket in women's basketball.

And this is no disrespect to Dawn and SC and how far Sc has come. The history isn't there yet and SC hasn't been a national contender long enough. ND and UCONN go back to the old Big East days. It's a heated rivalry, ask Muffet.

Nice place . . . Do they have
a match on February 8th?

The desire to play UConn demonstrates that Muffet recognizes the Huskies are the team against which all others are measured. If ND aspires to be on top, playing UConn gives them the best yardstick for their progress year after year. Wish all of the top programs felt that way. (Are you listening TN? Duke?) The best coaches aren't afraid to put up.

Don't believe they desire to be that good!

Tennessee would play us if not for the ridiculous stipulation by Geno that they have to call a former player that was recruited a decade ago and apologize to her and her mother first.

Muffet likes playing UConn. Textbook definition of masochism.
Well except for that three year period where they beat us 7 times in 11 tries. Of course, then Geno went out and fixed that by recruiting the #1 player in back to back classes, and that was the end of that.

Compare the records against each other over the past five years. What team has won the most battling each other.

donalddoowop: "Compare the records against each other over the past five years. What team has won the most battling each other."

You have got to be kidding. Yeah ok, in regular season and conference games (Big East) over the past five years, yes, ND won more games than they lost against UConn. Whoop-Dee-Damn-Doo.

BUT SERIOUSLY, GET REAL. In the one game that counts the most, in the only game that really matters to the great programs, in THE most important game of any year for every team in women's college basketball (except, of course, if you're Kim Mulkey who insists the Big12 title is more important to her than the NCAA Championship:rolleyes:), it has been UConn, UConn, UConn (3 in the last 5 years). UConn, UConn, UConn, UConn, UConn, UConn, UConn....

I will grant you that Notre Dame has a remarkable NCAA Tournament record, but it's one of incredible FUTILITY, reaching the National Championship game 4 times in the last 5 years and losing EVERY SINGLE TIME! Yikes! Good job getting there, but you don't finish.

I wouldn't like it, but Notre Dame could beat UConn every single time they play in every regular season matchup- as long as UConn continues to win the only game that matters, the final game of the year- the NCAA Championship Game.

Those losses were pretty painful and included one in the NCAA if I recall.

OOoo. smeone has their panties in a bunch.
Yep, Geno's rediculous alright, rediculously AMAZING!
UT can stew on the back burner as long as Geno wants and it's OK with me!

donalddoowop- - - When ND went on that streak you're talking about, if you watched the games, ND didn't beat UCONN, UCONN beat UCONN! For what-ever reason, CT players did not believe they could beat ND, and played like it! When they got their heads screwed on right, they've destroyed ND every time they've played since! By 18 to 28 points!
There has to be something critically wrong with ND and The Muffett when you've had 5 shots at the NCAA title and the ONLY ONE they squeezed out was in 2001 when the Huskies were missing 2 AA, Shea & Svet! So we really GAVE THEM that win too!
Now with Jewel Loyd gone and Turner their only great player they won't be winning any titles in the near future!

I told the poster to compare records because Muffett saying she wants to continue playing UCONN does not sound like masochism to me. Not when they have beaten UCONN as much as they have. That is my only reason for making the statement. Read the whole post before jumping on my response! The most important game is the NC game. I'd take those three regular season losses in 2012/2013 for the one NC win every time.

ND and UCONN go back to the old Big East days. It's a heated rivalry, ask Muffet.

There are three main reasons that the Huskies vs. the Irish has replaced UConn vs. Tennessee as the dominant (most intense and most viewed) rivalry in wcbb:

1. It's an old rivalry, going back to the Big East, when they played often and spiritedly -- and always Muffet vs. Geno;

2. There has been lots of ebb and flow in the series; both teams have lost some heart breakers to the other; and,

3. Both teams have a national fan base: ND, a tradition of excellence in sports going back to Knute and the Gipper; UConn, due to Geno, backed up by CD, Rebecca, Diana, Maya and Stewie (and "Bird at the Buzzer."). :)
All that represents Mount Rushmore to Holly, Dawn, Kim, Brenda et al. When their teams play Conn, games are competitive, but not yet a really, really hot ticket.

At least not yet. ;)
