If I was Burton I would have walked away from uconn three years ago. I cannot imagine how the athletic department can raise money now.

Herbst went to him and made nice. All this kind of guy wants is to be recognized, to be in the loop, an insider. CT Mike is spot on correct as to how you deal with them.

No he shouldn't. This isn't his fault...in fact, he warned against it.

Thats just dumb

So did I. Problem is the Burton (with cash) didn't say anything more pertinent that I (without cash) said. Don't hire P. Now? Fire P.

Let's not make Burton a hero here. Was he right that P wasn't up to the job -- sure he was, but so was I and so were many others here. The truth is that Burton's entitled temper tantrum may very well have caused hathaway to feel like he had to hire P or be ceding control of the program.

Burton was a hero in this case. Hathaway should have had control of the program ceded from him. PP has been an unmitigated disaster for this program. Burton called it and was right. Think how much more of a hero he'd have been if they had listened and save us all from the geriatric retread.

You don't know any such thing. You have no idea how pertinent, or impertinent for that case, the information Burton had, was to the hiring of a coach.

It seems like a good strategy, but it is a slippery slope. After the second meeting of nodding and smiling - and then doing something totally opposite - you will get phone calls and emails saying "Don't waste my time any more if you're not going to do what I tell you to do".

I personally don't have the patience or the stomach to stroke the egos of big donors. This is all I need to know about Mr. Burton:

"I would trade that Rolls Royce of mine in an a heart beat if I could be in your shoes ..." - addressing the football team at the opening of the Burton Complex.

When you let outside money influence how your athletic department goes about it's business you start sliding down that slippery slope that puts a bad face on college ball these days and what ultimately killed the SMU program back in the day . Burton had the right to send in a letter or make a phone call about his experiences with Coach P and his opinion about the situation but that's where it should end. If he didn't like the hire or the process simply don't donate any more money to the school. Don't threaten the school by demanding already donated money back or to have a name of a building on campus changed. Should Burton also have an influence on which players get recruited? What color, style, brand name the uniforms are?

Some folks seem to have been on this 3 year mission to oust Coach P(where is that conspiracy kitty pic) and after seeing "Mr. Burton" over and over throughout this topic you have to wonder where the motivation for it was born.

Holy smokes weyuo!!! How many slippery slopes can we have in one thread? :p

Sorry I had half the thing written and then had to step away, hadn't seen recent posts till after I posted.

So why doesn't UCONN hire Mr. Burton as athletic director? Or give him the ability to pick the next coach? The only courtesy he deserved was being told the coaching selection before the general public. That is it.

The first thing I would do if I hit the powerball is offer to pay Mr. Burton the money he spent on UCONN athletics back so that his name could disappear from the facilities.

The not so sad fact is that people who contribute millions to college athletic programs expect a say in what goes on. Winning and that legal "say," are really the only ROI expectation available to large boosters. As we have all found out, there ain't no free money in college FB. Further, our sources (TV, attendance) of money are in-process of drying-up. We need our donors, contributors and boosters more than ever. Do you really think that AD's, Coaches and Presidents at SEC, Big-12 or Big-10 conference schools don't spend large blocks of time kissing butts attached to boosters that make Burton look like a beach-day? Hell, Oregon might as well be Nike U. It's not a bad thing to have wealthy people invested in your FB program. In 1A FB, it's an absolute necessity and it is never free.

As far as I can see, all Burton did was send a sharply-worded, somewhat personal complaint letter to the official involved in running an entity in which the author was heavily invested. The whiny, thin skinned recipient, instead of confronting the author personally, leaked info that ultimately led to an FOI request and the letter becoming public.

My guess is that Burton, at this point, feels like he's dumped perfectly good money into a smelly sewer. He might take you up on your offer.

You are spot on. If you don't treat big donors with respect you lose big donors. How anyone on this board can disagree with that indisputable fact is beyond me.
