The Mountain West is the first conference tourney to get underway, with 1st round games involving the bottom 6 teams. The top 5 got byes.

Absolutely. I'd be fine w/ Fresno St. getting the auto bid as well, clearly the best team in the conference during the regular season.

#6 seed San Diego State and the #11 seed Utah State are fighting to extend their season another day. Headed to overtime.

#1 seed Fresno State, who dominated conference play with a 15-1 record. survived a tough challenge from #8 seed Nevada, 75-71.

Haley Cavinder, a freshman guard from Gilbert, Arizona, led the Bulldogs with 26 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. Her twin sister Hanna Cavinder added 16 points and 4 assists.

I think each conference deserves at least a little love. Imo there's way too much fetishizing of the so-called "power" conferences (a marketing term they've succeeded in popularizing). The advent of conference-centric TV networks has been great for making more games available for viewing, but they have also exacerbated the inequities across conferences.

Haley Cavinder, a freshman guard from Gilbert, Arizona, led the Bulldogs with 26 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. Her twin sister Hanna Cavinder added 16 points and 4 assists.

Averaged 15.7 and 15.6 ppg this year. Usually there is a noticeable difference in ability between twins, pretty hard to find it here. Haley is the rebounding sister though, 7.3 compared to 2.3 average.

The #4 seed Spartans of San José State (don't forget the acute tilde, as it's part of the official name) are leading the Lady Rebels of UNLV by 7 at halftime.

TIL that Arizona's Sam Thomas has an older sister who plays for UNLV. Her name is Bailey Thomas, and she's a redshirt junior. She was just named MW Defensive Player of the Year.

***Upset alert*** from the Thomas & Mack Center.

#3 seed Wyoming (15-11, 12-6 MW) trails #11 seed Utah State (7-22, 2-16 MW) at the half, 39-25.

This wouldn't be quite Hartford-Stony Brook huge, but a very big upset nonetheless. Utah State had lost 5 in a row, and 9 of their last 10, coming into the MW tournament. They beat #6 seed San Diego State in overtime last night. Wyoming is on a 5-game win streak coming into tonight.

And just like that, Wyoming has erased the deficit. They cut the lead to 2 by the end of 3Q and just hit a 3-pointer to take the lead early in 4Q.

Edit: now on a 13-0 run, the Cowgirls have taken a 5-point lead with 7:26 to play. What a turnaround.

The winner of this game will play Boise State in the semifinals tomorrow.

Seeds # 1-4 all advance to the semis. Would be surprised if #1-2 (Fresno and Boise) do not meet in the final, a game I hope to view.

Boise features Sr G Jayde Christopher who is #2 nationally in total assists and former Oregon Duck 6'5" Mallory McGwire who was a key part of Oregon's to consecutive runs to the Elite 8 her freshman and sophomore years. Sat out last year after transferring.

Don't know much about Fresno except they are seeded #1

#1 seed Fresno State made easy work of #4 San José State, 94-68, and awaits the winner of Boise State vs. Wyoming, which starts in about 35 minutes.

Mountain West player of the year Maddi Utti finished a dominating stat line of 22 points, 15 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals and 1 block.

Aly Gamez added 22 points, and the Cavinder twins combined for 32 points of their own.
