Originally, he planned to retire at age 44. But in what was supposed to be his last game, things got out of hand, and a couple of Schmidt’s teammates were ejected — an action Schmidt sarcastically applauded the refs for, until he was tossed too. And he couldn’t well go out like that. So he came back for another season, finally calling it quits at 45.
