There is a clear distinction of at least three classes in Division 1 football. FBS P5, FBS non-P5, and FCS.
All hoops champions on the last 20 years (and much longer) play division 1 football.
18 champions of the last 20 years had FBS football.
13 of the last 20 were playing in a P5 conference.
Only 2 teams have won Div 1 championships in both football and basketball in the last 20 years: Florida and Villanova.
I think none of this matters much. UConn and Nova aren’t P5 football, both are in a Top 3 hoops conference, both have a shot to compete for hoops national championships, and any potential P5 breakaway is football driven and not likely to affect hoops March madness.
