More the Truth - Miscatagorized UConn

His friend Hugh is not doing Jim any favors on his way back to CT:
“Then he added: “For some reason, amateur football in the northeast is just — lacrosse is bigger than high school football. So when you go to a UConn game, which is 30 miles’ drive from campus — of course (the Huskies) have a great basketball culture — but you have to stand on the sidelines to really absorb just how bad that job is.””

Maybe but I’m a little skeptical that Mora’s at all unhappy about the comments Millen made. Sounds like they’re good friends. I’m sure Mora’s saw the article and knows UConn fans saw it. He could have addressed Millen’s insulting comments in the Courant interview and said he was flat wrong if he wanted.

One of the most ludicrous statements made anywhere by any supposed sports fan or critic. Some of the top HS Lacrosse programs in the NE reside in lower FFC and their football teams are decidedly more.... Why bother? It's clickbait garbage.

Came in during the worst of times. Yep, UConn never had sellouts, full parking lots of impressive tailgating scenes, scalpers working the lots ... became a competitive program in and near the end of a BCS conference existence. Thought Millen was always dealing with injuries since Oregon and had a tough time throwing. Could run like a deer though.

The more I think about it, the more Millen’s disrespectful comments annoy me. I think he made them because he (and possibly Mora) were defensive about comments, including Saban’s, expressing surprise that Mora left for a program like CSU. But instead of arguing the merits of CSU, he chose to denigrate UConn. A classless move that I’m not convinced Mora didn’t approve of.

So I looked up the records of both teams since UConn upgraded to 1A / FBS in 2002:
  • UConn has slightly more wins than CSU since 2002 (including a signature road win over Notre Dame) & a better winning %
  • That’s despite UConn playing in conferences with more difficult competition over much of that time (a superior BE power conference for 9 of those years and I’d argue an AAC that was better than the MWC for 7)
  • Uconn also played in conferences with 10 programs that are now P4. Only 3 of CSU’s MWC mates are now P4.

See my petty post about UConn v CSU rankings at The Athletic here. 😁
