These are national rankings per NCAA.com. I’m liking the turnover numbers

Noteworthy that UConn is fourth in scoring defense while being number one in (fewest) fouls committed per game. Playing excellent defense without fouling (much).

Conversely, UConn isn't getting to the line much either.

Also amazing that with a 75 rank on three point percentage UConn is still number one in overall field goal percentage. UConn is taking over 24 threes per game so the two point shooting percentage must be crazy good. High field goal percentage also helps with the number 3 assist ranking.

Hopefully offensive rebounds (280th) and free throw attempts (349th!) increase as the season progresses. There is some correlation there. Admittedly shooting 52% overall does limit the number of offensive rebounds available.

Easy enough to calculate:

Total shots made 228 of 441 attempted, 51.7%
Total threes made 59 of 172 attempted, 34.3%
Total two pt shots made 169 of 269 attempted, 62.8%

Apparently, because UConn is not fouling much, their opponents are not getting called for fouls much either [fouls beget more fouls]. I think UConn's offense flows better the fewer stoppages are called.

Go Huskies!

The free throw percentage is killing me a bit. But everything else looks good. Specially that field goal percentage .
With our low FT%, maybe it's a good thing we rank #349 in free throw attempts per game.

The a/to ratio and FG% are of course stellar. When your two most prolific shot takers are shooting 61% and 55% something good is happening. Hopefully there's not too much slippage when we face the elite opponents.

Holy Cross had the right game plan, they just didn't have the talent to make it work in the 2nd half. With UConn not having an inside offensive presence, HC fronted anyone who tried to post while overplaying the 3 point line. It neutralized Bueckers and Fudd from the arc and forced UConn to take too much time off the shot clock running their weaves to get any entry passes inside. That's why UConn doesn't get to the foul line and their 3 point percentage suffers. They need to find a way to attack the rim early in the shot clock to loosen up the 3 line.

Hard to get consistently good foul shooting when you hardly ever get to the line. Being close to the bottom of D1 in FTs made and attempted is much more alarming to me than a mediocre percentage.

UConn is often one of the top teams in several categories:

FG percentage

Assists per game

Fouls per game

Assists per game

At the end of the season, I would like to see us at #1 in ... winning percentage.

I think some things will change over the course of the season: FT shooting will improve as Jana improves (she often hits the back rim, but her form is good) and Azzi gets more playing time; 3-point percentage will improve as Sarah approaches her norm and Azzi gets more playing time;

As the 3pt shooting improves the lane will open up more for players like Paige/Chen/KK/Azzi/Sarah and Jana (and eventually Aubrey when she comes back.). The issue has been the team is not whole yet which is why for example their 3pt shooting is as low as it is. That's why on the postgame threads those being critical of this team in November are a bit nuts. Other than Paige everything about this team is much different,. Therefore to expect "complete games" from 18-20 year olds this early on a consistent basis is nuts. There shouldn't be too much worry for this team until they face South Carolina. That's their barometer. They may very well lose a couple or could be undefeated. I know many are pointing to the ND game but both teams are going to be much different in March than they are in December. And probably the same with SoCal.

In regard to being a whole team as it affects UCONN's overall stats; listen to what Meg Culmo said regarding the Holy Cross coach's strategy. It was to force Paige to be a passer and was okay for anyone else to shoot. Do we really think that is a viable strategy when Sarah and Azzi get more and more comfortable for example shooting 3's? UCONN took 31 3's in the game and shot over 40% probably the best for the season. Do we really think teams like South Carolina are going to "allow" Azzi and Sarah to have open 3's as their pregame strategy?

And look at the UNC game in which they changed the pace of the game by playing zone. Overall how do we think that strategy will work as both Azzi and Sarah get more comfortable? So long and adieu you Spanish ladies . . .

As far as Jana - she alone is the cause for the team f't shooting at only 67%. Take away her ft% and the team is shooting 76%. We can all see the potential but shouldn't ignore the 35.7% f/t shooting %. I know some are clamoring for her to start but you can't start a player this awful at the free throw line in which offensive execution is so important while at the same time expect "40 minutes of complete ball." This is our best potential player for inside scoring and highlights another example why UCONN is not whole yet. BTW Jana is 8th on the team in terms of True Field Goal %. (TS%). Just looking at fg% is not enough.

Therefore, I am hopeful that especailly if the team keeps winning through December that any absurd posts about the team not giving full effort or going after the coach because they are only winning by 15-40 points vs 25-60 will just stop.

The data for " FOULS" and "assists to turnover ratio" should really
show it effect in the LOUISVILLE GAME! I love the ASSISTS and FG %!!

All these statistics questions can be answered by the per-40 spreadsheet (downloadable from here).

Additionally, you can select which games, which locations, whicn opponents and which players to be included in the calculations. There are 3 grids: 1) totals for all the selected games/locations/players, 2) rates per 40 minutes for all stats and percentages of freethrows, total shots, 3-point shots, and 2-point shots, 3) the normal per-game stats.

You can also go to jackromanowicz.com and find a link to a page on my site that will connect you to all the various stats on the NCAA site, including the team rankings like @HuskyNan posted above with an additional similar list for individual players on the team.

An interesting stat which shows UCONN is in a class by itself is the net between assists and turnovers. It’s kind of a proxy for ball control, shooting ability and not giving your opponent transition opportunities.
UCONN…11.3
UCLA……..6.3
SC…………3.0
USC……….2.2
Texas………1.1
ND…………..0.2

Apparentl Geno knows what he is doing.
