We’re in good shape here, the hell with Yates.
Accepting the new realities and having a plan for dealing with them will determine who is successful and who gets fired. Used to be the AD had arolodex of up and coming coaches to replace his franchise HC. Now the Recruiting Coordinator(GM), has to have a list of athletes at other schools who are contactable about transferring. Loss of Yates was followed by some nice grabs on the DL in the portal. Don't think we started from scratch when Yates finally went.

Not sure how Mr. Personality fairs with college kids that don’t have to put up with authoritarian BS and can hit the portal. Time will tell.
That will be very interesting to watch.

Especially this generation of kids which is more anti-authority and doesn't respond well to criticism.

Gotta assume that his reputation precedes him and the players will be quite coachable for at least a couple of seasons. And his coaching style at this level will probably evolve from his NFL days too.

Yeah I imagine for a few years he’ll pull in some kids. The deadpan “just do your job” approach or your persona non grata doesn’t seem like a winner these days.

Last year UConn wrapping up the spring with an open practice instead of a true spring game. I think the new transfer coaches are part of the reason why… the smartest coaches are already doing it, Nebraska just trying to keep up.
I think spring game stuff has passed its relevancy. To me, it was always about teams trying to prove how crazy their fanbase was, or something weird like that.

Guys do not want to participate in bowl games. Younger players do not want spring games. Maybe they just want more NIL $ for their effort ? More pay or no game. Wait until they unionize.

This isn't about the players not wanting a spring game. This is about coaches hiding the abilities of their players so they don't lose them so easily to the portal. It's all about the portal.

I used the Blue White Spring game to get the grill out and tailgate and then try and glean information about new players. At one time, our attendance wasn't bad, and the game was televised. Now, college football is so upside down that teams don't want other teams to see their players and recruit them away in the portal. Something has to be done to put some parameters around the portal.

I agree. Fun time out for fans in the middle of April is a silly proposition.
I know you are being facetious, but I really do miss the spring games when the weather was good. Having to break out the 100 SPF sunscreen. drink some obligatory beers, down some stadium eats, I never understood why it never drew that well. But if the weather was good in April, spring was breaking out all over and the possibilities outdoors were endless I guess.

Spring games were a chance to fill 80,000 seat stadiums one more time per year.

I liked going during the RE1.0 time. Live scrimmage and you would get to see some redshirt freshmen that showed potential as playmakers. A Lutrus comes to mind. Diaco brought in a transfer tight end from somewhere from the mid-west that looked great at catching the ball but never made it to the fall for some reason. It was also an opportunity to sell some season tickets. IIRC RE had one at Memorial one year? Also liked attending the open practice at Storrs under PP. Got a very up-close look at the players and was able to listen as they were coached up at the various position groups. We walked over to the sleds and talked with Don Brown for a while, He was very accommodating and generous.
