As successful as the franchise has been, you may have to go back to Brooke Wyckoff to find a backup post that was a strong contributor to the success of the Connecticut Sun. Scanning the list of those suggested for the Sun’s 10th Anniversary All-Time team, Connecticut has had an exceptional group of starting post players: Tina Charles, Asjha Jones, Taj McWilliams-Franklin, Wendy Palmer, Margo Dydek and more.

The bench though? Not so impactful; which is why it is worth noting that this year’s team made their most significant roster addition – a backup post, former Duke Blue Devil Mistie Mims. For the first time in years, the Sun has a player that is perfectly suited for the role of understudy to Charles and Jones, and that may be a difference-maker in the playoff race.

It appears that Mims is taking a lot of minutes (in the first 3 games at least) from Kelsey Griffin, and I'm not so sure that is warranted, given Kelsey's effective contributions in limited minutes so far. Mims may indeed be better suited to be a backup 5, but Kelsey has been effective as a backup 4. But clearly Mike Thibault has decided that Mims deserves the major share of the playing time that those two will get.

Neither player is going to be as much of a scorer as either Tina or Asjha, although they seem to be effective as rebounders and defenders. Still, the Sun's biggest shortcoming is at the 3 position. Neither Kalana Greene nor Danielle McCray are in the same class as the wing players of other top contenders: Tamika Catchings, Seimone Augustus / Maya Moore, Swin Cash. Hopefully it is a small enough problem in the overall picture that they can overcome it or at least compensate for it.

Kelsey Griffin may be able to rebound, but she cannot defend the big bodies or set screens like Mistie can. That is a huge part of what is needed from that backup post.

Both Griffin and Mims played really well yesterday vs. Washington. It was nice to see the bench contributing besides Renee.
