Mississippi St vs Virginia - 11/09/18

Been watching MSST at UVA WBB on Watch ESPN... Score at halftime MSST 45 UVA 17. Don't give too much credit to MSST because frankly UVA is very weak... missed layups, missed short range jumpers, can't hang on to the ball (nearly 20 turn overs in 1st half), not much defense,...

McCowan not the biggest player on the court, UVA has 6'9" center...
AEH has been in the game, hit 2 from 3pt range.

People were worried about how well the MSU guards would shoot?

72-44 MSU final

AEH 13 pts (5-12), 1 reb, 1 ast in 29 min
McCowan 12 pts (5-10), 12 reb, 2 ast, 4 blk, 3 stl in 29 min
Howard 8 pts (4-8), 9 reb, 1 ast, 3 blk in 20 min (foul trouble)

AEH 3-8 from 3pt. Not afraid to let it go.

Interestingly MSST and UVA played even in the 2nd half. both scoring 27 point in the 2nd half. Underwhelmed by the play of UVA... especially in first half.

Victoria Vivians esque ?

if Vic gives her the green light she will be happy to keep on shooting................as I predicted in a thread a few weeks ago, if he gives her minutes and the shoot sign she will easily average 13-15 points per game if not more............

I believe Vic will definitely give Andra, Chloe Bibby, and Xaria Wiggins the green light from behind the arc at all times. Wiggins was 0-5 tonight and at least 3 were short. Danberry and Holmes are tenacious defenders. 6-9 did seem to bother McCowan and Howard a little, but McCowan still got her double double and Howard had 8 and 9 (didn’t play a whole lot due to fouls.. for the second game in a row).

Im still not sure how well Howard and McGowan are gonna be together. McGowan is such a big body in the lane. I just think Howard’s rebounds numbers could go down unless she gets a lot of long rebounds off missed 3’s. Will definitely be something to watch. I will be waiting for the Bulldogs and the Ducks

Was at the game. MSST defense was excellent. UVA found out before the game that their starting PG (from France) is out for the season for the 2nd straight year. She would have made a difference, but MS still wins easily. McGowan and Howard looked good, but not great. AEH very willing to shoot... moved well. Danberry very impressive on defense.

Watched the replay on espn3. Msst defense is STELLAR scary good! The on ball pressure from the perimeter was as stifling as ive seen from a team in years and it was only game 1. I was interested to see how McCowan would do agianst a taller player , but she literally Dismantled aeyotan and poor tina Thompson's debut as HC. AEH was chucking it but played great pressure defense as well.

They were 7-23(30.4%) from beyond the arc, that is pretty worrisome to me!

They were 6-14 from three at halftime when I posted that.

Considering the one 9-min reserve shot 0-5 from three, I’d take 7-23. She won’t be allowed to shoot it like that every game.

Starters shot 21-42 and most of them were out fairly early in the 4th quarter. AEH played 29 min. She was like a sixth starter. If the starters can shoot 50% with this defense against all teams, they shouldn’t lose too many games.

AEH missed her first 3 or 4 shots and then did very well after that. She forced a couple of shots early, but most of her shots were within the flow of the offense, and she put in a lot of effort on D.

The transition game was very good in the first half. The guards and Howard and going to put a lot of pressure on teams to get back quickly on defense.

I wonder how many UConn bench players would still be in a game after missing their first three or four shots, especially if a couple were forced?

Mississippi State was outrebounded by Virginia...didnt expect that to happen. Good start for AEH and Mississippi State. Looks like theyll provide a lot of scoring help for McCowan. Wish they faced a tougher preseason schedule but it looks like theyll be the class of the SEC once again.

most likely only KLS from the starters and none of the bench players

I wouldn't read too much into the rebound numbers. It was a 2 rebound differential. I think TO's were 17 to 3 in the first half. That is a lot of possessions with no shots for Virginia where the defense would have the advantage on rebounds.

Aiyeotan did have 16 of UVA's 43 rebounds. Howard had 9 in 20 minutes with her playing time limited by fouls as in game one.

Looking forward to the MSU vs Oregon game.
I agree, I think it's a bad matchup both ways. Oregon struggles with quicker, more athletic teams and Ms St isn't as offensively talented as Oregon nor do they have the size Oregon has over there 3 forward positions.

True, but this is a very different Mississippi St. team.
Yes, it is a different team, quicker, deeper, and better defense but no real go to star, Vivian’s, as yet.

Curious to see if they can do a better job on McCowan. She had 35/19 last year and just dominated the Ducks frontline.

I’m thinking it might be a better team. As far as go-to player goes, I think McCowan is difficult to stop. But if you don’t see her as a go-to player, maybe it’s better not to have a go-to player. In this game, the team high player score was 13 pts but the team still scored 72 pts. That means you can’t key on one player. You have to stop the whole team. Geno loves when a team relies on one player for most of the offense.

Yeah I'm not reading into it, especially when it was a blowout win for Mississippi State. Just didn't expect anyone to outrebound Ms St this year with McCowan and Howard in the front court.

The player that had 16 reb is 6’9. Virginia might be out-rebounding a lot of teams.

That will be a key. I don't think Hebard can handle her 1 on 1.

Danberry will likely guard Ionescu. That is going to be a whole lotta fun to watch. Danberry is easily one if the best on-ball defenders in the country this season, so it will be interesting to see if she can stop Ionescu. Ionescu one of the best offensive guards in the country. This is offense vs. defense at its best.

Bibby and Boley serves as an interesting matchup. Both are slow footed, but can really shoot the ball. Bibby is much improved, and those two might cancel out.

Howard and Sabally also an interesting matchup, mostly because the 5 inch difference between the two. Both are very different players, but I think Howard may be too athletic and energetic to handle. Sabally is one heck of a player though.

We all know about the Hebard-McCowan matchup.

Both PGs are pretty good too. Holmes is also a tenacious defender.

Another key part of the game is depth. Mississippi State clearly wins that category and may tire out the ducks. Howard and McCowan have gotten in foul trouble a little this season too.
