Finally we are starting to play some ball.

Zone defense. Don’t see that very often but a good move by Coach Schaefer.
 
Honestly States zone with the current lineup looks great, very athletic and quick.


Matharu is a game changer. She may get crazy but her crazy helps a lot.
 
Zone has been effective so far. Really has taken Vandy out of their offense.
 
Vandy has scored only two points in this quarter.
 
Great adjustment by Vic in the 4th quarter. I know state usually is man to man but they should play zone more often at times, they have athletes that can really make it work.

I like this Vandy team though. Last year I thought they were an up and coming team. They ran out of gas here in the fourth quarter.
They are going to be a tough out for a lot of teams the rest of the year.
 
In the battle of Tennessee teams, Tennessee edged Vanderbilt in the turnover margin, 27 for UT to 26 for Vandy. Yikes.

You could tell Vanderbilt had no clue how to attack the zone. Their passes were hesitant and the players without the ball just stood there.
Regarding lineup adjustments I can understand bringing in X Wiggins as she is long and athletic. I would have expected her to sub for C Bibby instead of R Jackson. A Matharu for J Danberry was also a surprise. However it worked and that group ran a very disciplined zone and outstanding half court sets.
 
Did not expect Carter to outplay Fasoula as she did, but 22 points on 8-9 shooting, and held Fasoula to 6 points.

I wonder if Espinoza-Hunter transfers at the end of the year? They do lose Danberry, but I would guess those minutes will be more for Hayes, Matharu, Wiggins, etc.
 
I hope she does not transfer. She is still a good player even if she is struggling right now.
Her explosiveness from the three point line could very well help us win some games later this year.
Our depth is outstanding even if we are young team.
A game like tonight is great experience for these younger players. To struggle and get outplayed for for two of the four quarters but then really put it together in the final stanza is a good learning experience all the way around.

I like Wiggins a lot. Her offense is so hot and cold but her defense and length is a big issue for teams. I thought Matharu was superb defensively, she is a small player with really quick instincts and hands. That combination worked really well. I like that Matharu doesn't let one or two silly mistakes get to her, she just continues to do her and it eventually all falls in place. Her craziness makes me laugh as I see Vic saying "no no no" then Matharu makes some crazy play and his reaction is priceless.

I think the biggest disappointment of the day was Bibby who did absolutely nothing but register 1 steal and 4 PF's on the stat sheet. 0 shots, 0 points, 0 rebounds. When Cooks is eligible next year she will play with Carter at the 4 and 5.

AEH has been a real no show this season. I think it is just lack of confidence on her part. She appears to be afraid to shoot even when she is open. Last year her stroke was so smooth, this year it just not there. Hope she can regain the touch. She and Promise Taylor have been the biggest disappointment for me so far.

I saw C Bibby’s stat and was a little surprised as, although she struggled in the first half, played well in the fourth quarter helping to maintain the discipline on the zone and the offensive sets.
I’ll be interested to see A Matharu’s development next season. Although she isn’t the tallest player out there she doesn’t seem to get taken advantage of on defense. She compliments M Taylor a lot better than J Danberry as Matharu can score on all three levels.

Yeah, the zone didn't really save Vandy. Miss State is weirdly effective at getting to that spot. And if you help, they're going to get the ball inside or be in a position to get an offensive board.

I'm not sure I've ever seen a team use that action so much and generally speaking you usually see it pushed out more to the perimeter.

The offense is very different without T. We generally worked the perimeter looking for passes inside to T. This year, teams can defend the 3 better on the wings, and AEH is feeling the added pressure.

Because teams are trying to stop the drive, the top of the key is more open than it has been in the past. In the weave, AEH is really no threat to drive, but she could be effective if she would stop and pop from time to time. Teams are daring our guards to shoot the 3 from the top. AEH should take them up on that offer.

Matharu has taken them up on that offer. She has been a real surprise to me, I knew Mingo-Young and Jackson were potential starters but Matharu has so much confidence she could end up as the biggest positive for that class!
