I believe we have players on the team that have self doubt. They have a lot of self doubt and lack confidence. Sometimes theyre afraid to shoot the ball because they are afraid they're gonna miss and be pulled out of the game so they defer to Paige or Sarah. They were HS AA's and their HS team depended on them. Now UConn needs to depend on them. We've got the talent however imo we lack the confidence. To live up to our talent and to become the team we know we can be we have some areas that need to be addressed.

We need scoring from the bench. When one or more starters come out of the game we need somebody who can come in and score. Instant offense. As of now its Allie. Shes not afraid to shoot and shoots with confidence. Shes not afraid to take the ball to the hoop either.

We need 5 players on the floor who are a threat to score. That we force defenses to defend us one on one. We lost 2 games leaving opposing players open and they werent afraid to take their shot. In both games we lost our opponents shot the ball well and alot of that had to do with us leaving them open thinking they wouldnt make their shots.

We need scoring and rebounding from Jana and Ice. They must develop moves to get to the basket. They must be confident to look to score and take their shot. We can go with a small lineup however against top teams we will need both Jana and Ice. So for now they must get minutes and the coaching staff will need to work them very hard to help them overcome their self doubts. We know they have the talent and ability its their self doubt that is getting in the way. To overcome self doubt you need confidence and to gain confidence you need to take what you learn in practice and apply it in a game without thinking you cant do it. If you can do it in practice you can do it in a game but to get to the point of being able to do it in a game you need to play in an actual game. To go from doing it in practice, to an actual game takes time thats why playtime and tuff coaching is needed. I believe inserting them into the game and pulling them out to correct them when they do something wrong is a great way to improve their mental attitude. It will give them confidence that their coaches trust them.

Ash KK Q and Kaitlyn Look for your shot. Attack the defense like you did in HS. In HS your team depended on you. You need that mind set at UConn. Get to your spot and shoot it. If you miss keep shooting. If your taken out of the game because your missing to many shots talk to your coaches to tweak you. Then get back in and try it again.

Azzi needs a few games under her belt and she will be fine. Griff the same. How many games will it take? As many as it takes. Azzi will be fine and give us a third scoring option. Griff will be a terror on defense and give us some scoring.

To become dominate, we need 5 confident scorers. That means over the next few weeks we need everybody not named Paige Sarah or Azzi to look for their shot just like they did in HS. They were AAs. In HS they were depended on to score. Be that person at UConn. Find a way to score. If you not hitting your outside shot find a way to score and work on your shot. We all have off days. I think part of the problem is when they see Paige and Sarah scoring they dont think they can shoot like them so they dont. They are hesitant instead of having the mind set to be a scorer. Understand you take the shot and if you miss take it again. Let the coaches be your judge dont you judge yourself.

Many great points but not sure I agree with

"... I believe inserting them into the game and pulling them out to correct them when they do something wrong is a great way to improve their mental attitude. It will give them confidence that their coaches trust them. "

That might give them a feeling their coaches trust them but to me it doesn't help build confidence in themselves and their playing skills. If you notice in our games when either Jana or Ice make a mistake they will most times glance toward the bench to see if they are going to get pulled. In Jana's case she is her own worst critic which needs to stop. Pulling players as soon as they make a mistake does not instill confidence. It creates frustration. What does help build confidence is knowing you can make a mistake and know you're not immediately getting benched but instead stay on the floor especially in games against weaker opponents to improve. Its not that they don't know they screwed up. They do. They just need game time playing to improve knowing that at the slightest error they won't have to be pulled and in some cases sit for a majority of the minutes.

some good thoughts,

but speaking of coaches, i wonder if the additional coaches -- is it 5 now? -- are affecting things. kids' upbringings are vastly different in the 21st century and except for morgan, the coaches are ancient and might be set in their ways and not very flexible (like me ). and are too many in the gaggle?

I completely agree w/the confidence issue. The SNY announcers also touched on the fact that the team needs to have more of a killer instinct.

Many of them pick up their dribble too early with no plan, or get caught under the basket w/no plan. It looks like none of them want to shoot. Passing/ball movement is great, but there were wide open lanes in yesterday's game & no one driving to the basket. A few players had wide open looks and passed the ball!

Yesterday Chen, Chelli, and KK all picked up their dribble too early, but Chen does it consistently.

No offense, this is just opinion but IMO your post is nothing more than excuse making. The players that look over their shoulder are the same players that should be looking over their shoulder because they know they aren't playing well. Using Jana as an example, to believe that Geno is the cause of her not playing well when she blows two layups is wrong. To blame Geno for her 35% free throw shooting because she might get pulled is made-up analysis. When I played in measly High School for a very strong team, yeah I'd get nervous about being pulled because I wasn't as good as the others. My coaching staff and my teammates were supposed to sacrifice games and chemistry all because my coach needed to give me a hug? How is that fair to any member of my team?

Maybe. Maybe this wouldn't be excuse-making if we had some evidence that the style is no longer valid. But that’s not the case here. Let’s look at last year. What “confidence” did Geno show in Ice for most of the year along with Amari? Let’s review how many posters on here and for that matter others that weren’t posting on here last year would’ve thought UCONN was fried? And what about 2 years prior when UCONN got to the Finals? His teams have ben devastated by injuries these past several years and yet he’s been to a Finals and FF of which the Final Four a terrible call away and potentially they are in the Finals. Yet we’re supposed to dismiss all this for make-believe psychology?

IMO we all need to chill. As Nan has pointed out, this UCONN team isn’t made up of robots or pros. How about there be a recognition that the coach’s way of doing things might still be right? For me, I can’t ignore the past recent success nor when I played back in the Dark Ages. I just feel the reasons you are giving are excuse-making and make-believe psychology. Sometimes you just have to recognize that a player just isn’t that good at this moment and other more deserving players deserve the time. They are the ones that should be rewarded. That’s how greatcoaches build great sustainable programs.

You made some good, relevant points--our underachievement comes from a lack of confidence and does appears to be a mental thing. They all are super-talented. but is a thing that is largely derived from their relationship with the coaches. Honestly, except for Morgan, they all seem too tentative, afraid to make a mistake. Too tight. If so, Geno needs to examine his coaching methodology --you know often he talks about how vastly different things are than back in the day. Maybe the same could said of the young women of today and how you relate to them and hold them to an appreciable bar of expectation but build confidence at the same time.

Hesitancy does appear to be a major issue as you pointed out--there are times Chen could continue to the basket for an easy layup, instead she pulls and kicks it out to a teammate. Same with KK. Ash seems to feel a bit more comfortable shooting, but not Ice or Jana.

Could it be that Geno has made the team so Page-centric that he's created "reluctant players" syndrome? I hope not. As others have pointed out, if we can get a reliable third scorer along with Paige and Sarah and decent support scoring from the others, we will be just fine.

I am hoping that the third scorer will be Azzi of course, and she is more than capable of doing this--but like you are alluding to, Azzi has mental blocks as well. It was so unfortunate that her recent injury knocked her out her groove because I felt she was ready to return to previous form. Here's hoping she finds that groove again because her shooting along with Paige's and Sarah's inside/outside game will be quite formidable against any team in the country...

Additionally, did you hear Geno tell the TV analyst during the post-game interview that he already knows his best line up? I feel it's the four guards plus Sarah. Morgan will no doubt be starting before too long--or at least get starter's minutes.

Let's face it: This season is going to be a slog. There will be a few times when the team looks like they could beat the Celtics and a lot where they cannot seem to get out of their own way. The centers are developing at a snail's pace. This year, the freshmen are playing like freshmen, and the sophomores, who last year played like juniors, are at times playing like freshmen. As someone else said not long ago, there is something not quite right about this team.

But UConn has a wonderful coaching staff. If anyone can straighten things out over the course of a season, it's them. However, for us fans, it is not going to be pretty. Unless they improve markedly and quickly, they will get skewered in their last two non-conference games. We have to hope that it all builds on itself, that Geno pulls them all together by tournament time.

I feel like that would speak more towards the attitude of the players … I’m not trying to throw anyone under the bus. I want players to play smart (as in, no hero ball or just chucking up shots senselessly), but I also want them to WANT to score. Sarah is one of those players for me.

I think Rocky, and Tonyc can correct me if I'm wrong, that a " not" got lost somewhere between the thought and the execution.
I think it requires 2 "not" to fix it. I'm sticking with sarcasm.

I agree with what you say, but the quick hook thing with Jana--is that productive? If a player is not giving their all, certainly there's redirect necessary, say not going after a rebound or failing to block out... however when you pull a player for missing a layup mere minutes after she's put in is quite humiliating for that player, and from my understanding, humiliation is never an effective motivator and/or redirect methodology....

This is especially so for an inexperienced player....

Uconn has 25-26 more games to go. For all the faithful fans, don't you think Geno and the coaches will be able to figure out what is wrong and fix it ? I remember last year's team was supposed to be a catastrophe with all the injuries and he took them to the final four with 3 freshmen. I have faith in Geno and Chris and the 3 other coaches to bring the team to Uconn standards. I will sit back and root the Huskies all the way to NO.12 and enjoy every game I am privileged to see. GO FRESHMEN!!! GO SOPHOMORES!!! GO HUSKIES!!!

Scoring is just one side of the coin. To defeat the top teams, UConn will need to rebound much better and play tougher defense. And the biggest question for me is, will 6’5 Jana develop into a good enough player by March to really help? Will she become a solid rebounder and defender without getting into foul trouble? If she sits on bench due to fouls or nerves, she isn’t rebounding or defending or even scoring- and I do believe team needs a good center to win #12. I’m not confident that Ice is the answer- she just isn't getting it done. Aubrey returning will help with defense and is amazing on the fast break, but what if she doesn’t return or isn’t 100%?

UConn needs Jana to concentrate on defense and rebounding first rather than offense- sure, it would be great to get points from her, but it does seem to get in her head if she misses shots. Too many times UConn is getting out-rebounded in games. It shouldn’t happen, and Jana can help. The offense will come eventually.

No doubt defense and rebounding are the priorities, but if Jana's defender falls down and she's left standing all by herself under the basket with no one within 8 feet of her, she needs to be able to hit a wide open layup. And if for some reason she misses said wide open layup, she needs to collect her rebound with some modicum of composure and stick the putback. And if god forbid she misses the putback, she needs to keep her head in the game for the next play. Instead, this sequence was her undoing.

Sports are a test of both body and mind, and it doesn't favor the overly fragile.

However, I did recall after one "exit" by Jana that she had a nice
"chat" with C.D. on the bench. Jana was, to my way of looking at
this T.V. scene, "taking it all in". A learning experience? Could be?!

One of the things I enjoy about garbage time is watching Q. She is almost always the last one off the bench, probably because she makes more than her share of mistakes. But she rebounds with enthusiasm like she's related to Dennis Rodman. And talk about confidence? There's not a shot situation that Q would pass up. Need someone to shoot? Put Q in the game. I don't see any indication that Q worries about her mistakes. This also could have something to do with Q being the last one off the bench :)

Plus she's real easy to find on the court. Kinda like Swin with her white crunchy, but more emphatic.

Great points as always, @Tonyc

The sad part, we don't know what is happening at practice. What they are doing before and after practice. We don't know a lot basically. We see them on the court during games. We don't know the game plan. What we do see is during games, for example Ice and Jana being on the perimeter setting screens for the guards/wings and then those guards/wings one or two dribble and settle for the jump shot. Now the Bigs (Ice/Jana) are out of good rebounding position so if they do happen to get a rebound, they risk picking up a silly foul and going to the bench for foul trouble. So, it is a mind game being played out there.

Bench players: We do have some scoring options on that bench. Again, a lot will depend on the game plan and how much they are in their heads. Folks forget that when Aubrey was in the starting rotation, she struggled. She moved to the 2nd unit and was first or second off the bench, and she shined greatly. The same will happen with the current players on the bench. They just have to embrace their inner savage and step into their greatness. Stop dimming their light out of fear of outshining others. Be savage in practice or games. Iron sharpens iron!

Could be. We shall see. Jana is still developing and learning. As her national team's primary option, she probably was allowed to do certain things and now she has to adapt to playing a certain way for a certain spot, it could be a learning curve, and I am sure Jana is open to the challenge.

Good points, especially for KK. While she has one of the worst percentages on her three-pointer, not sure why Geno or CD don't refocus her on the midrange shot. KK is so quick, she can usually get open on her drives. Instead of always going to the basket and often missing the layup or getting blocked, not sure why she doesn't pull up for the 8–10-footer. With a little work, this could be money.

This. The chat between CD and Jana looked like they were on the same page and that Jana was confirming she knew what she did/didn't/was supposed to do. And she had a positive expression. My $$$ is still on the idea that she's trying to cram the missing 1.5 years into each shift she plays.

I like the idea of teaching Jana during the game. Pulling her out of the game to tweak her and putting her back in is helpful in her development. She was a scorer in Egypt against lesser competition. She can score its a matter of adjusting to WCBB where the competition is much better
