This is the first stand alone women's college basketball game in the Garden since December 16th, 2023 when St. John's played Villanova and according to A1 research perhaps only the second ever. Before that there were only special event doubleheaders specifically the Maggie Dixon Classic which ended in 2015. At nearby Barclay's Center there is the Shark Beauty Doubleheader in December but this is the Garden tonight. Whether or not the history is accurate, this is a very big deal.

MSG is the Mecca of college basketball, the home of the NIT since forever, and the venue of the Big East men's tournament since 1983. It was here that the college game really took off with Saturday afternoon doubleheaders with the local powerhouses like CCNY and NYU, now D3 teams, and the usual suspects like Manhattan, Fordham, St. John's and others.

So yes, this is a bit of a milestone. I will be there as will several other BYers based upon prior posts. The game has a late start at 7:30 pm which cries out for dinner before and naturally, we picked a steakhouse, just like we would for the BE tourney. The women's game has arrived in many ways and this is just a logical progression of its popularity and draw.

I know there is the point of view which thinks a close game tonight would be very helpful to the cause but I want just the opposite. A definitive demonstration by UCONN of why the womens' game is actually a superior product. The passing, cutting, ball movement, offenses, lunatic pressing defense, and a showcase for the country's best all around player in Sarah and its best shooter in Azzi.

Geno once said that when he saw the late 60s and early 70s Knicks play, he realized that is the way the game should be played. You see a lot of that in the sometimes over-unselfishness of this team and so it's very appropriate that the defending national champions are playing here tonight in the home of the Knicks.

So enjoy the game but be aware of the much bigger context it is taking place in. Another brick in the wall.

I haven’t been to a game at MSG in almost 50 years. That will change tonight. Back in the day I watched a lot of basketball games and a few hockey games at MSG. But this will be my very first WBB game at MSG. I’ll report back on the experience in the postgame thread.

The Garden is awesome. Still the best basketball temple on earth. Driving to it? Not so much.

Enjoy! MSG is one of the best venues in the country for basketball. Of course, my opinion may be influenced by the fact that it is typically packed with Connecticut fans when I go to see a game there.

I have a feeling you'll have a lot of company in that regard. Amtrak to Penn Station is incredibly convenient (we're only slightly less convenient in busing into Port Authority and having to "hike" downtown to MSG).
It's also been quite a while since I've been there, and I'm looking forward to it (unfortunately, no more Gerry Cosby's anymore).

It's hard to imagine how Amtrak to Penn Station wouldn't be much the easiest route considering Penn Station is directly beneath MSG. Some or most of you will remember the furor when the latest MSG iteration was built in 1968. The upper level of Penn Station was razed and the below street level retained as Penn Station. The main Penn Station building was an impressive sight. Architects world wide fought the city over its destruction. Economics prevailed and down it came.

The original Penn Station Building was a marvel of neoclassical architecture. I used to have to go over there as a student working summer jobs in the area.

Today, what's left of Penn Station is an embarrassing rats' maze below the Garden.

I'm curious to see whether Paige and Stewie (& Napheesa, since she's the Unrivaled co-founder) will be at MSG tonight. Also curious to see if any of this year's Huskies show up in Brooklyn tomorrow for the Stewie vs Paige Unrivaled game.

LOL,

Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is a flavor enhancer used to add a savoryumami taste to foods like fast food, processed meats, soups, and snacks. It is composed of sodium and glutamic acid, an amino acid naturally found in tomatoes, cheese, and mushrooms. While often associated with Asian cuisine, it is widely used in various foods to enhance flavor and reduce overall sodium intake.

Just curious which steakhouse you picked. I would have picked Keen's...

Shout out to the fellow BYer that sat next to us at Mustang Harry’s at dinner prior to the game who was with his son, to celebrate his 80th birthday! I hope you enjoyed dinner and the game. 😀

Couldn't get in it was booked. A place called Butcher and Banker right on 8th Avenue. Former bank building, the dining room was in the old vault. Steaks were top shelf.
