Sure you can. I totally agree with out about it, for UConn it obviously sucks. For the other teams in the conference, getting to play WBB on channels like ESPNU/2 during the regular season is a huge deal. His job isn't to do what's best for UConn, its to do what's best for The American Conference.

The AAC board lead by Susan Herbst agrees with you. Mike Aresco's contract
was just renewed until June 2022.

“Mike Aresco has done an outstanding job of leading the American Athletic Conference through its early years and I am very happy that he will continue on with us,” Susan Herbst, President of the University of Connecticut and Chair of The American’s Board of Directors said in a statement. “Mike is a strong commissioner who is respected by the presidents and institutions within the Conference. It is important for The American to have excellent, consistent leadership and that is what Mike provides.”

AAC gives commissioner Mike Aresco contract extension through 2022

Drew, I'd be curious about just how many non-UConn AAC WBB games were televised on ESPN 2, of even ESPNU.

But I do agree that giving up tier 3 rights, and especially WBB games, really hurt only one school. If you are that school however, it is fair to say that the league isn't really promoting your interests.

Tough for me to pile on praise for the commissioner when he is taking cash out of our hands to support the rest of the league.

What would you expect her to say? If you agree that actions speak louder words, then the fact that the bulk of conference scrambled for door when the Big 12 started sniffing around was a shout.

He's obviously doing a great job and continues to expand and build the brand and has been rewarded with an extension. This is a tough job. It's completely understood why every team would take a P5 invite. All the more reason why you want a savvy leader. You know the old saying "When the going gets tough, the tough get going"

And the going is is tough in the AAC, so we should get going?

Yeah, I'm not sure that can list the specifics of "the great job" he's doing.

1) Got the worst $ per school of anyone in the "P6" by a very, very large margin, but got great exposure.

2) Talks about AAC using the "P6" a term that only he uses.

3) Added Wichita State University to the conference.

What do you have?

Thanks Drew, I was actually curious about the answer but not so much that I felt like doing the legwork. I don't think we disagree at all. I'm just not as likely as some to sing the guy's praises.

There's really not much that Aresco can do. He's been a good soldier in the fact he's been touting the AAC and doing so in a somewhat reasonable manner.

That being said, the AAC is paying him around $1.6M a year, which is damn near more than UConn athletics as a whole takes in from the leagues TV deal.

At $1.6M a year, just doing a decent job isn't enough. He really needs to perform like a person that is being paid top dollar.

You can look at any way you like, but the basketball run conference didn't help the old Big East football at all. If Marinatto was on the ball the Big East could have picked up and we would have watched the Big 12 to fall apart instead of the Big East football.

I won't knock the guy. He was handed a situation that was complete chicken * and he's worked hard to make it into chicken salad. If in the next round of media deals he is able to maintain exposure while withholding some media rights for conference members to sell individually, he will have created the best possible situation for UCONN outside of P5 Membership.

Not sure how I feel about the push for the P6 - this has the potential to make us more of a laughingstock than the fake trophy game with a team we played against only a couple times.

There's nothing else she could have said. The alternative was that he's horrible but she got outvoted so he got his contract extension. It's like the Big 12 claiming their non-expansion vote was unanimous.

Nothing's going to top UCF leaving that stupid trophy on the field last year. Unlike the forced rivalry, you can spread some of the shame to the other schools in the conference. Kind of reminds me of the UConn is the 6th borough thing in NYC.
