It was a good article. Nothing in it hasn't been talked about ad infinitum on the BY, but putting it out in print makes the casual fan aware of BS accounting games happening. Want UConn to play in the XL? Split the profits 50/50 with UConn. UConn doesn't take a loss from playing there and the sink hole that we call the XL center doesn't get to hide it's lack of profitability.

Exactly. Move MBB and WBB to Gampel for a year and then negotiate a more equitable deal. The XL is just way too expensive.

Is there a state law or anything mandating the number of games played at XL each year?

We are all aware that there is political pressure to play games at XL. Does anyone know what mechanism needs to be overcome or changed to redo the mix between XL and Gampel?

You can keep your Boneyard Negativity Bias Study.

Nationally 120th and 11th in league. Last year 106th nationally, 12th in the league. I rest my case.

Wishful thinking is not what is done when charting a pathway forward. A hard jaundiced look is what is done. No rose colored glasses or negative bias allowed.

I see what you are saying, and I actually agree to a certain extent. But I am in the camp that we will always be hard pressed to top the out of high school star rankings so our ability to identify and develop diamonds in the rough has always been, and will always be, of more importance. Even given that, I still would like to wait until signing day #2 before passing even initial judgement on this class.

Once again, UConn Daily guys nailed it this morning. The XL Center is GREAT but only when it's sold-out. If that means playing all but, say, 3 or 4 games a year in Hartford, then so be it. Hartford has AHL hockey and UConn hockey (for now) in the winter months; baseball in the summer months. There is year-round sports entertainment inside the city limits to help support the city's food/service industries. The dumpy XL can stand to lose hosting a few all of those Nov/Dec cupcakes that draw > 10K/game. Save the XL for the handful of marquee OOC games on the schedule and maybe 1 good AAC game...then play the rest at Gampel.

You also rested your case by conveniently leaving out the proof that Edsall recruited 10 three star athletes. One of which is really a four star (Harris). Edsall needs football fans like you like a hole in the head. Jerk.

If you believe Edsall can find under-the-radar guys as he has in the past, and coach them up, then it's possible it works out. To argue that we already know whether or not that's true is patently false. We won't know for 2-3 years.

Ideally you get back to being in the 60's rank or so of recruiting, but right now, given the dumpster fire, it's gonna be tough.

But we can't know yet if Edsall still has the ability to make those players better. He put plenty of unranked players in the NFL. We don't know yet if he can do it again.

Harder and harder to find under the radar guys who want to play in a northeast outpost of a southern league in the age of Twitter and Instagram. Getting those guys to come to the Big East was one thing, to the AAC quite another. But we shall see. This year should give us some kind of indication. And I think that the second signing period may be key.

Literally apples to oranges. You're comparing a finished class from last year to one that is only half full. Let's see what RE and Co. Bring in on signing day then look at the numbers.

Looking at the commit list for RU, SU, BC, Temple, AAC etc. Most schools have classes that are 90-95% completed after the December signing period. Better hope Randy still has that magic from a decade ago if only half the class is locked in at this point.

Some of us have proposed cutting non revenue sports for years but for reason that bothers many here on the board. They also need to rework the concession and parking breakdowns etc with the rented venues.

Fine if they do it here. But if it is for "state budget" reasons - you need to do it at all of the directional state universities also.

So I guess a good answer to this dilemma is to either get rich friends of the AD or double football and basketball ticket prices. The state is pretty much broke in every spending category.

Hazmat suit on....

Well, i’m Glad to see another recruit from STA! Don’t underestimate the Raiders! ...and I would take every 3* player from every high school that has a winning tradition in state championships with a high football pedigree. I don’t believe all 3* athletes are the same. We need players who know winning and know position level football.

Eliminate men's: golf, swimming, tennis, track, cross country.

Eliminate women's: cross country, swimming, tennis, track.

Legalize sports gambling in the state and dedicate those funds to UConn athletics.

Double down on football (don't cut corners, try to appear "big time").

Reasonable deficits are expected and they are acceptable. We have to knock down that $40 million to maybe $10 million fast and we'll be ok.

The new AAC contract will help, a little.

Without FBS, we're the University of New Hampshire.

So you took out a few million on non-revenue sports, doubled down on football and somehow cut the deficit by 30 million?

Sure let’s do that.

It's all over but the crying now. This should have been done years ago, and every dollar saved should have gone into things like coaches salaries for football.

I think he used legalizing sports gambling to pay for everything. However, there is no way people will legalize sports gambling in CT then give the money to UConn athletics.

They will do something lame like give it to the casinos and it won’t generate squadoosh even if they did.

I think we need to do everything we can to allow football to do well. The success of our football and basketball programs has a huge impact on our academics.
