A couple of days ago I saw a mention in the Courant that the NCAA approved an earlier Midnight Madness...I think it was to take effect this coming season. It would move up about 2 weeks...late September. The number of preseason practices would stay the same but it would allow the coaches more flexibility in terms of scheduling the allowed sessions.

At least an exhibition where we beat some D2 school in eastern PA by a score of 141 to negative-six?

Pretty darn hard to get negative points net. One can have negative points, sort of. If they award a three, then change it to a 2, they do a negative one to get the point back, but that cannot produce net negative points.

They can count a basket then decide there was offensive goal-tending and wiping it out could be viewed as negative 2 (or three) but again not a net negative.

As a trivia question, it used to be possible to score points without putting the ball through the hoop. Anyone care to guess how?

I guess it is still technically possible no, in the case of a forfeited game, when the score is 2–0.

This is a rule change on the men's side that brings it in line with the practice calendar for women's basketball. The NCAA changed the calendar for Div 1 women's basketball in 2010 and allows teams the option of beginning practice 40 days before the 1st regular season game but limits the number of practice days during the preseason to 30. Beginning with the '13-14 season, the men's teams have the option of beginning practice 6 weeks (42 days) before the 1st regular season game and similarly limits teams to 30 practice days.

Geno has so far decided not to begin practice early, saying "I'm not changing anything. I'm planning on our season going into April, so I don't need to start any earlier." It'll be interesting to see what Kevin Ollie decides to do and whether it changes the date of UConn's First Night activities.

Isn't there still a rule against goal-tending? (Not that it comes up in the women's game, but still.) Or basket interference more generally?

Good point. I was thinking about offensive, but yes, defensive goal tending would score points without a ball going through the net. So let me go further, it used to be possible to score a point without even taking a shot.

Thank heavens for the WNBA news and pix starting up.... I am having SERIOUS UCWBB withdrawal. USABasketball and the WNBA will have to get me thru till fall.
