Michigan State Scouting Report

Not saying you’re wrong, but the results of the season might say the opposite. We lost to St Johns twice, got whooped by Marquette in the 2H, and struggled with Seton Hall’s defensive pressure twice. All teams whose strength is defense. Granted we also struggled with Providence and lost to Creighton, but I think the teams that force us into overthinking and mistakes on offense are the worst type of matchup
So basically basketball teams.

I attribute that to the BE reffing. UF and KU were as good defensively as anyone we played in conference. Halls entire team would foul out in an ncaa tourney game, by halftime.

I’d much rather play a good defensive team that can struggle to score than vice versa and we could get that all the way to the final: MSU>SJU>Houston. If we can play good D I’m confident we can eek out enough points against anyone.
If you use kenpom then Houston and MSU don't struggle to score. Houston has the #10 most efficient offense and MSU #22. SJU is #42. UConn is #30.

The BE reffing worries me a bit as it comes to recruiting on today’s world. If you’re a top flight freshman do you go to a league that is know for holding and mauling, or to a league like the SEC that offers more freedom?

We’re in the sweet 16 so everyone’s pretty good at this point, but Of the 15 other teams MSU ranks 11th out of 15, SJU ranks 14th, and Houston isn’t as good as Illinois but I’ll happily take Nebraska too.

.-.

You mean holding and mauling like the NBA? No they are more interested in NIL $$

Mullins didn’t come to UConn because it was the highest bidder. He came because he thought it would prime him best for the draft.

Toure could have gone to PC for the top bidding. Don’t agree on that unless you are a slam dunk 1 or 2. SEC will have freedom of play and NIL.

I don’t want to go from HS to a league full of brutes in my showcase year.

Mullins is an interesting case. He came here with a lot of $$ with a great coaching staff to be next in line of lottery picks. What he found out is that he’s not ready for the NBA for a number of reasons. It’s ok. He will learn more about that when he goes to camps this summer. Maybe he stays in the draft maybe he comes back it’s his decision. I love his game great kid.and I will follow him wherever he ends up. Mean time happy he’s finding his way in our system

The good news is the spread between KP#10 and #30 offenses is just 2.9 AdjPts per 100 possessions.

Given that there are typically ~60-70 possessions in a game, the difference in these offenses is basically 1 scored bucket.

Transition defense will be key.

Their offense in the half court isn’t that great. They rely tremendously on using their defensive rebounding advantage to get out in transition and get easy buckets. Their bigs and Carr run the floor extremely well and Fears is constantly looking to get the ball to them either over the top or quick dribble down the court.

I’m debating whether it is better to just give up offensive rebounding to better set our D.
