Michigan Scouting Report

Dare I ask, given the matchup questions at both ends, would either coach consider throwing in a wrinkle and going zone for a portion of the game?

It would be insane to roll that out for the first time in the championship game, but that also would make it kind of brilliant if the guys can execute it. Might help mitigate foul trouble and neutralize their huge front line. This is kind of a pick-your-poison scenario and I feel like "hope they miss a lot of 3s" isn't the worst option in a pressure environment.
I think Michigan is going to switch a lot of actions off ball, which will look like a bit of a zone.

For what it's worth, I pulled this off of a Michigan site:

I thought it was interesting. 21 PPG off of transition? Just getting back on D could take them out of their game.
21.6 transition plays per 100 possessions, not 21 ppg. So 1/5 of the plays are in transition. And they score 1.36 points per possession on those plays.

But actually doing the math out, if they play a 70 possession game, it does come close to 20 transition points a game.

Big scouting report with film and video. Back under the paywall, unfortunately.

The keys from the end:

There are no structural mobility issues but the pain and soreness could still very well cause mobility issues. He was very slow and noticeably impacted on Saturday.
I saw a video from yesterday where he was walking in flip flops but seemed to be moving gingerly imo...even if he can score, whoever he is guarding needs to run him into the ground

In looking at the Duke game v.s. Michigan back in February...couple of notables:

1. Duke didn't go crazy from 3. Both teams hit 6 threes, with Duke shooting it at 32%, and Michigan at 24%.

2. Duke outrebounded Michigan by 13. They also outscored Michigan in the paint by 10.

3. Duke only allowed Michigan 7 fast break points.

Yes, Duke was healthier than. But so was Michigan. LJ Cason had 7 points in 14 minutes.

He'll have the advantage of being used to it and no doubt they're going to numb it up before the game. It may end up being a factor, I'm just not sure how much.

Toradol is just a nsaid. Can inject that in his arm. In his glut. In his thigh. Anywhere. Just high dose advil.

“Numbing up” before a game, is a lidocaine injection into the injured area to literally block pain receptors. Doable for certain injuries. Not mcl.

My recollection is that Mara picked up a couple of soft fouls pretty early in that one but I could be mistaken.

I honestly wouldn’t hate starting Silas on Yaxel, or at least mixing that in. Get underneath him a little
Funny you say that because that is what they have in a CBS Sports article. And it does make some sense. Would rather Demary on him than Mullins. But I also think it might be more beneficial to shut down Cadeau. If Lendeborg is struggling to move around then maybe Mullins can handle him.

UConn has no other options for Lendeborg with this lineup combination. Demary is UConn's biggest guard and best chance to contain him. Lendeborg has guarded point guards all year, and shadowing Demary allows him to roam a little as well.

I think I'm the genesis of the "numbing it up" language. I stand corrected.

It’s not the dribble. It’s the constant movement and cutting.
I know. St. John's wasn't too concerned with it. Superior athletes who are conditioned aren't phased by it. Sometimes you need to change it up and get into a defender's head by beating them off the dribble.

St John’s is familiar with our sets. Very different.
