Won't a faster moving and more varied offense make things a little more forgiving for the OL? It's hard to create openings when everyone knows exactly what you are doing.
 
Read the article, he was in possession of a weapon twice when you have to ask why do you need a weapon to go to college. It's enough to say he wants to change and so maybe get a shot at the pro's but it's a huge risk and we don't need the distractions. What happens after the season ends, when there is no more football and you're real far from Arkansas and Alabama? I vote no.

Dyer's been kicked out of two programs now. One of which is Auburn, who has NO rules. No thanks.


Edit: And there's a lot more to it than just failing drug tests and carrying a legal weapon. He is a cancer on the team. Skips practices, shows up late to meeting, and generally has a "bigger than the team" attitude. That is exactly what UConn does not need. A player in the lockerroom sowing seeds of discontent over not getting the ball enough.
 
I agree with jax on this. here's a kid who was kicked out of Auburn, which is almost impossible. He was kicked out of Arkansas State. According to SI, Arkansas wants nothing to do with him. And he's been away from the game for 2 years at this point on top of that. I get taking a risk here and there, but you need to evaluate those situations pretty carefully and this is not one I think would be worth taking.
 
Normally, I'm inclined to give kids like this a shot at redemption. However, and from a UConn football perspective only, I think it's a little late for that. So, I'm a "no" in this case for the reasons already stated by jdb, Jax and free. I think the downside risk to the program is not worth the potential incremental gain. We're on a 3-5 year time line in terms of earning a P5 home. With quality RBs/FBs like LM, JW, Max D, J Claxx, M Walsh, etc., and hopefully AN coming on board next year, we should see solid contributions at those positions for the entire period given improved OL play, O play calling, and QBs that effectively air it out to keep Ds on their heels.

Everyone deserves a second chance after the pay their debt, if any, stemming from them getting into trouble in the first place. Dyer is on his 3rd or 4th chance. I'd prefer UConn to move on from this opportunity.

Yes, UConn had issues in the running game, but the ball carrier is just one of a minimum 7 people involved in a given play and may accounts place equal blame on the offensive line. I agree that Lyle McCombs was misused and over used last year, but there are probably other backs in the Huskies' stable who can do just as adequate of a job as a presumed headcase on his 4th chance...
 
Drugs and weapon in his possession?

Some cancers do have a cure yet.

We don't need this one spreading among team mates and other athletes.

If we look hard enough we can find "a clean" athlete that feels he hasn't had the opportunity he was promised. Plenty of good (athletic & academic) bench warmers out there.

Wouldn't shock me in the least. Strong has it great there. He brings SEC standards to a school with high school academic requirements.
 
The stuff I've read about Dyer makes me think he's not that bad a kid. I'd give him a shot.

Winners like to win and will take chances in order to give them a better shot at winning. They have a legit shot at a national title this year. It makes sense for them to take a shot on a guy like Dyer. Between him and Bridgewater they have two Heisman caliber players in their backfield.
 
If McCombs can slam a girl around then why can't Dyer be a Husky? They'd fit right in with one another.

Wow I had forgotten that ridiculous 'suspension'.

Auburn throws no one out... but it's hard to see how they didn't screw Dyer.

Multiple failed drug tests, gun charges, and missed team meetings and practices to boot. The guy is just not a good teammate. Again, no thanks.

He may not have gotten any charges, but he was hanging with a group and lent a gun to one member of a group that went out and committed armed robbery all hopped up on spice. I don't think UConn needs people that participate in that culture.


ETA: Also, the people in this thread claiming he is a Heisman type talent are VASTLY overrating how good this guy is. He is an above average RB, not Adrian Peterson.

It doesn't really matter, since we aren't in play but knowing what I know I'd give him a chance with a zero tolerance policy if I had an extra scholarship laying around.

I just can't get worked up of pot. If every college athlete who smoked pot was taken off the field - the games would be awfully boring.

He was first team all-sec he is better than an above average RB.

The holier than thou people on this board need to wake up and look in the mirror. UConn basketball and football has not exactly been the cleanest program over the last decade. If the kid can qualify then grab him, our team is picked 7th in this dumpster fire of a conference. We should take any talent we can get.

I disagree wholeheartedly.

Football has been clean since making the jump, though the DeLeone offense may seem like UConn has been on probation for the last two years.

Wow is all I can say. So, you'd want a Willie Williams or Janzen Jackson representing the University of Connecticut? I'd rather go 0-12.

Really? David Teggart, Jerome Williams, Lyle McCombs, Greg McKee, Corey Manning, B.J. McBryde, Donald Thomas, Marcus Campbell, Angelo Pruitt, Tyvon Branch, Donta Moore, Dan Davis, Danny Lansanah, Marvin Taylor among others suggest otherwise.


It is not Florida, but we are not squeaky clean either.

I am not saying you take everyone. Due your due diligence on the kid and if you think he is an okay kid who made some bad choices but has now matured and can qualify academically I am 100% supportive of giving him a chance.
 
Kid was kicked out of Auburn. That is difficult. Kid was kicked out of Arkansas State. I'm not even sure that's possible. Arkansas passed on him despite a desperate need for a running back.
I agree that we need to take some chances, but they need to be smart chances. I don't see this one as fitting that description.

How many of the above did not learn from their mistake, and if not, how many were released from their obligation to the team (i.e. Erik Kuraczea, Cody Endres)? I'll bet the number is either the same or not far off from one another.

This particular individual in question seems to be on his 4th chance. I'm all for second chances, but there comes a point where third, fourth and fifth chances become enabling.

We are in a sucky league with a mediocre team. Add Dyer and we are still in a sucky league with an average team. But he adds the risk of making the school look bad when UConn really doesn't need negative publicity. The negatives FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR outweigh the positives on this one.
