Memphis Post Game Thread

So there’s a ton of blame to Hurley for the tech and I’m not absolving him. But…if that behavior is unacceptable then call it when he did it early and often all game. Why wait until there’s 40 seconds left to decide it’s over the line?
It compounds, refs usually give a little leeway.

Remember last January when the refs took a ton of shiite for the 62 free throws in the Pee Cee game. Today's refs be like 'hold my beer, we going for 64'

seems like he was as wrong about Mahaney as he was right about Reed. his only transfer miss to date but it's a crucial one. Mahaney is playing like UConns worst starting PG since sterling gibbs
Its starting to look like hes our nick timberlake. Someone expected to be an impact player but turns out to be huge miss. Hope Im wrong.

And they even reviewed it and still didn’t change it lmao. Solo was stationary and is entitled to his space he was straight up. You can’t flail your elbows into opponents jaws. Well, apparently you could today.

The craziest part about that call is that the young guy who I’m assuming is the one Hurley didn’t know blew his whistle on the contact between Solo’s face and the elbow. No hands, no body, nothing else.

Got nothing from Johnson, nothing from Mahaney, nothing from Diarra until the very end and OT and Hurley ignoring time and score to put on a show.

We are going to need someone to step up at PG and Reed has to start if only to limit Johnson's fouls.

Our best 5 is Reed, AK, McNeeley, Ball and Stewart. Other guys have yet to show they can defend and run the offense.

The ball spent way too much time in the hands of Diarra and Mahaney. They are nowhere near enough of a threat to score in the half court.

Oh I'm a blamin' the refs.
If the refs don't make some of the bad calls they made all game would the outcome have been different.... I 100% think so. So yeah blame the team on the short comings, blame hurley on the tech all you want, but don't discount the bad calls and the situation it put the players in every time throughout the whole game. All of it can be true at the same time. Refs have as much blame on the loss as Hurley does with coaching and his behavior.

This is not to say that everything that was exposed wasn't true and the refs weren't the reason we lost the game. But they absolutely contributed so to say stop blaming refs who have direct outcomes on games is to discount how poorly officiated the game was on both sides.

May be in the minority after that huge shot, but I still need to see a lot more from Solo. Against good comp he reverts back to catch and shoot only. He has little depth to his game.
I’d like to see more driving to the basket. He’s going to have a quickness and athletic advantage over most 2 guards where he can finish, get to the line, or create for others.

.-.
I agree that Mahaney still needs time to adjust, but he was physically overmatched in this game. I don't know if it has anything to do with his aggression level. He doesn't have Tristen's size and he was being targeted for drives on every possession. I'm not entirely sure how, but he really needs to figure it out on the defensive end, otherwise he's going to be unplayable in certain matchups.
The lack of aggression comes when he has space at the top of the 3 point line and he refuses to drive and shoot, drive and kick. This is what he used to excel at. Right now instead he stalls the ball and dribbles looking for the offensive play to develop. This is unfamiliarity

You’ve gotta play so well that unbalanced reffing doesn’t cost you the win, we didn’t do that.

Johnson is so bad, I’m convinced Singare can’t be worse, just by default. Not that it matters. We’re fortunate that Reed is awesome.

Trying to turn Mahaney into a full time point might cost us this season. Go out and get an established point guard at the P5 level, why are we experimenting instead?

Dan has built up enough good will that I can forgive his mistake. I’d send Samson back to Storrs early for his.

Sucky part about losing first round is we might not get to face any ranked teams via Auburn, ISU, or UNC on the consolation side of the bracket to redeem ourselves in Maui. We need the boost for metrics.

The refs blessed us by giving out a double technical on the Samson push and Hurley rewards them by ripping into them for a 50/50 over the back call on McNeeley.

People can only take so much and he argues EVERY call. This game was not on the refs.
The game was on the refs in fact — but to your point, I think they realized their overt influence at times (30+ fouls on us) and tried to the players decide at times, like after the push.

The over the back call was tragically bad, but after one bench technical already, it wasn’t good….

Let’s see where we go from here in Maui… Will we get 2 more good games?

Easily the biggest loss from last year’s team was Newton. Right now we don’t have anyone who competently run the offense, and only 1/2 PGs can defend worth a lick right now.

A lot of mental errors on the staff and players. A lot to clean up. Probably a tougher coaching job for Hurley than either of the last two years.

Schedule someone other than West Cow Dick state university before Maui, too, please
What about Diarra? He seems to be a steadying influence, seems to me to run the offense pretty good and and doesn't make many mental mistakes.

Agree with you on the cupcake early schedule.

The refs set the tone for the game with a lot of soft calls and bad calls. Hurley isn’t going to get the respect he deserves by continuing to act like that.

With that said, our guard play on both ends was terrible. Mahaney can’t guard and looks to score first. Diarra was not good on the offense end and had unacceptable defensive lapses. If it doesn’t get better, Nowell should get time.

Johnson should only see the floor as a last resort. AGAIN, he had to sit the bench under 4 minutes into the game.

Reed showed he’s by far the starter and a beast at the 5. He needs to get the ball more.

Great game by Stewart. He should’ve played a lot more in the second half. Our best lineup was with Reed, Stewart, Karaban, Diarra, Ross.

Our team will go as far as our guard play will get us, especially on the defensive end. Guards win games.

I'd like to see Hurley referee a game.

Refs were objectively horrible. It was not a consistent whistle in terms of direction or timing. They put themselves in that position by calling a lot of early nonsense.

The elbow on Ball was twice the foul on the other end. Calling a cylinder play was ridiculous.

Remember when AK couldn’t buy a hoop…it affected his whole game. Look at him now.

He‘s allowed to have a bad game. Newton had plenty of them.

First, the good. The team showed character and fight. Second, the bad. Memphis provides a blueprint on how athletic teams can attack us all year. Finally, the ugly. The nearsightedness of many on here is incredible. Sure, Mahaney has struggled. But Danny and Luke brought him here for a reason and they know, if some of you don’t, that in order to make a run at a three-peat in March, they need need the Mahaney from St. Mary’s to show up.

The reality is that many teams RIGHT NOW are pretty much equal to us, especially after losing NBAer's Cam, Clingan and Castle and our All American Newton. We are still under construction with freshman, new starters with our All American Karaban.

Memphis was ready and we seemed rusty and out of synch. Typical of new players learning to play with each other facing a talented D1 team. I did not see failure, just uncertainty and executional mistakes (both fixable).

Just saying, this is not our February Team. I just hope fans didn't miss the preview late in the game. Championship DNA was still on display tonight.

Some of yall gotta log off the internet during games and give yourselves an hour or two to logically think after the game before you start posting nonsense on the internet.
Point out the nonsense please. Blanket statements like this are not helpful.

If you don’t know what he’s talking about he’s probably talking about you.
Or you, most likely. But thanks for the comment. Asking someone to point out what they are talking about is an issue?

Yeah it’s always good to change the pace from scoring and rebounding to getting ragdolled and dropping passes. Really throws your opponent off

Take a deep breath. We probably don’t win without him last year. Not sure we need to burn the entire program to the ground.

The lineup should be Reed, Karaban, Stewart, McNeeley and Nowell. Bench contributions from Ball, Johnson and Ross. Need to shorten the rotation. Some may say, Nowell hasn't played enough to start yet. We've all seen him play. He's our only true point guard and plays both ends of the court. Mahaney should get Joey C. volume of minutes.
You're sitting the Big East 6th Man of the Year?

Memphis’ guards attacked the rim and played aggressive on ball defense. They put the refs in positions to make calls and it took us an entire half to settle down
