Mel Stottlemyre, Yankees’ Ace During Lean Years, Dies at 78

Consummate major leaguer and elder statesman in baseball. What a gentlemen, teacher, quiet leader. Another legend passes from our midst.

Stottlemyre was a great pitcher who had the misfortune of playing for the Yankees between dynasties. His 2.97 lifetime ERA would have put him in the HOF had he played for the Yankees 10 years earlier or 10 years later. Fortunately, he did earn 5 World Series rings as a pitching coach.
