Running backs give and take lots of hard hits to the shoulders and that means the clavicles.

I'm not an orthopedic surgeon but doubt he can return this year unless it's just a slight crack that could knit in 4-6 weeks.

Even then, the season's over in about ten or eleven weeks so depending on how badly it's fractured we're likely looking at a redshirt year as the best outcome.

Never good to hear or read an injured player say "God has a plan". It might be a great plan, but right now it does not feel so great.
...depending on how badly it's fractured we're likely looking at a redshirt year as the best outcome.
The last two weeks, coupled with an unhealthy dose of borrowed Battered Aggie Syndrome, made my mind race to a conclusion that I don't like. I hope I'm wrong and that Mel can bounce back for himself and us.

Damn that really sucks, Mel is more than just a rb he is a complete weapon in the passing game and the return game. We have a lot of depth so it is next man up. Think he should enter the draft, can definitely make an nfl roster because of his ability to return kicks and be a receiver out of the back field, kind of Reggie bush like. Well hopefully he's back this year.

Saw that Delaware player land on Mel and thought it was the clavicle. The player put his full weight on Mel and he was already down to my eye. He will heal up and be fine next season. Not sure he would want to return this season but it is possible for the last couple games or a Bowl game.

We still have Cam, we still have Victor, we also have Oliver Lundberg Coleman, MJ Flowers and some other young pups on the RB roster.

Is this a season ender or like a 6-8 week injury?
Like most breaks it's a matter of severity. My guess (adding tackle football to the equation) would be a 6-8 week recovery (including reaching the point where you can strap on pads and take hits) would be the absolute shortest if it were a clean, minor break. A compound fracture would most likely be more than double that recovery time.

If that image is his x-ray, his injury looks just like a recent one I had. I had surgery and was cleared for activity after 4 months.

Now, I am a 40 year weekend mountain biker and have no medical expertise, so take my anecdote for what it is. I am just saying that x-ray looks remarkably like mine.

Rosa and Oliver Lindberg Coleman will need to contribute. Neither can duplicate what Mel could do, however.
Rosa has a tremendous nose for the end zone. Anywhere near the end zone he scores. The problem is he is prone to fumble
