So here’s the thing. There’s a limited amount of numbers that can be used on basketball jerseys: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and any combination of 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5 so that referees can signal foul calls with their hands. As more and more UConn greats get their numbers retired, are the Huskies in danger of running out of numbers…kind of like the Yankees in baseball.

Perhaps will eventually have to switch to letters?

Just saw the jersey number announcement for the 2025-2026 newcomers, and it got me thinking. When a UConn player gets inducted to the Naismith HOF, traditionally the player’s number gets retired. Will Morgan have to give up her #23 when Maya gets inducted in September? (Q was using Sue’s #10, but that is no longer an issue).

Geno has stated before that a number is retired after induction into the HOF, unless a current player is wearing it, then it is retired after that player has left UConn.

They might eventually get to where it is the X memorial number and maybe there is a patch with the retired player's name on the jersey. Because this is just the beginning of the HOF inductees. It is conceivable that it could get pretty tight with numbers in a few years. So many former players are also getting into media, coaching, and management that a lot of former players could eventually make it to HOF for the entirety of their careers.
