3 games in Hawaii here’s my take:

Diarra - defensively our best player but still lost track more than last year. Offensively some great plays but too many w t f plays to negate the positive. Still believe he’s a very good 6th man not as good as a focused starter.

Mahaney - Obviously had trouble on both ends. Consistently beat off the dribble and didn’t look comfy as a PG. He’s better than this and is pressing badly they will need to find his place on the floor.

Johnson - 13 fouls and 5 rebounds in 3 games says it all. I mean you expect to improve on a few facets and instead it’s potentially worse or at least was in Maui. Why DH gave him more rope than Reed amazes me?

McNeeley - kids got game no doubt but needs to finish more consistently. Gets to the hole nicely, we know he can shoot it but consistency will be the key on O. D wise he gets beat off the dribble, recovers ocassionally but needs to keep people in front of him, and rebound a bit more.

Alex - seems to be leading as well as he can but he’s a different player. He’s not that guy but he played ok but not good enough. Rebounding needs to improve both ends for sure. He actually had a couple ill timed fouls as well we know he’s smarter than that. He’ll be fine.

Ball - kid can shoot. For now it ends there. His takes to the basket never got rim against Colorado after pretty much no takes against Memphis. His defense is amazingly awful considering the athlete he is. Can’t keep anyone in front of him and can he quit trying to take charges? Stand up and play D or head to Duke for craps sake.

Reed - great game against Memphis that’s the guy we need. Despite that he should have had more minutes even in that game. Game 2 turned into Samson Johnson couldn’t keep his hands in his pockets, needs to stay on the ground too quit jumping on ball fakes. Game 3 14 minutes no fouls explain that one to me?? Puzzling use in that one.

Ross - he has potential but that’s all I saw. He is in too much of a hurry to do everything. He long and has potential to be a solid defender but he got beat off the dribble too much as well. He only made one jumper but I’m sure he’ll be fine off the bench. Needs to relax not rush. Did block a couple shots off the ball which was nice.

Stewart - overall played like you need off the bench but I question the minutes here? Played excellent in the first half vs Memphis and where was he from there? Strange. Nose for the ball, physical presence in compared to many other players but DH doesn’t like something. To me deserved most of Ross minutes, but if he gets better on D that will happen.

Nowell - he looked good for the most part. He’s faster with the ball than the other PGs and defensively kept his guys in front of him. He’s going to pressure everyone for minutes at the PG and I believe we need that to happen. Physical and despite his size he plays plenty big.

Abraham - not much time at all but I bet he’s an improvement on D, never know.

Singare - the same, but honestly he looked a bit lost in his minutes I was surprised .

Much improvement needed to win games. Can the staff figure out how to work the players strengths and weaknesses into lineups in the coming games? Will be interesting but it’s a bit scary at the moment. Memphis was solid, Colorado sucked and Dayton will be pretty damn good. Awful to go 0-3. Oh yeah forgot:

Coaching - lost the first game with an ill advised T by the head coach. He was incredibly consistent berating the refs throughout the first 2 games. Guessing that was discussed in the refs locker room so maybe better to coach the kids more, watch your use of substitutions.

Next 4 are very important 1-3 not good!

Biggest takeaway is defensive weakness. The only way to fix that is to change personnel. I see Nowell and Abraham as the fixers. It is not as if Stewart and Ross were lighting it up offensively. So if you can shore up the defense, you become immediately stronger.

Lots of question marks for sure. We were beat up badly in Maui, and we have a long way to go to be contenders for any post season play.
Big lesson here for the whole program. This coaching staff will make changes, do what they need to do, to keep UConn in the thick of it.

These scores are compared to my expectations, not in terms of absolute performance. So they might not make the most sense to someone with different expectations than I had

Mahaney D-. The good is that he can bring the ball up and does not turn it over. The improvements needed are that he needs to learn the offense so he can make quick decisions to get the offense going, including his own

Ball B-. He’s one of our few bright spots with scoring and shooting, but doesn’t give much else. Defense is very bad, and he doesn’t do much in terms of making plays for others

McNeeley C. Great shooting and smart player, but that Dayton performance drags his score down a lot. Willing to chalk it up to injury and I think it will be an outlier. He can’t stay in front of his man but actually does a decent job recovering and walling up

Karaban B. I want to give him lower because of his Colorado performance and I expected him to expand his game and take over. So far his scoring arsenal seems very similar to last year, not the expansion I expected. But he is our best player with an average of 20 PPG minus Colorado

Samson F. Good game against Dayton but really disappointed here

Diarra B+. The offense is visibly much better with him running it, but agree on a lot of questionable decisions to go with it. Also agree 6th man spark plug is his best role, but he is being forced to step up with Mahaney struggling. Good job doing that this week

Tarris C. This would be an A++ if he played all week like he did against Memphis, but was nearly invisible against Colorado and Dayton. I see a LOT of potential here

Stewart A-. Solid play when he got minutes. Not sure why he didn’t get more

Ross D-. Pretty invisible

Nowell B. Not enough minutes to be super impactful but he is our best defender. This is higher than his total performance should be, but he’s overperforming my expectations. If he can find a scoring groove and can hit open threes, he should get major minutes

Singare B. Defaulting him to a B. Didn’t get any minutes to prove anything, but I thought he looked decent against Colorado

Agree with this.

Karaban needs to add something other than long 3s to his offensive arsenal. His pump fakes and drives to the hole hasn't worked quite as well this year because he is the focal point. Defenders catch up to him and lack of athleticism makes it difficult for him to finish.

Lack of rebounding at 4 and 5 spot with Karaban and Samson Johnson can't continue.

Need Nowell to push himself into starting rotation. Play Diarra off bench.

Need another true PG for next year's roster.

I’m thinking about Mcneeley and Alex. One of them has to cover the 3 and neither is fast afoot for that role and a power 4 will abuse them down low.

I was accused of being a tough grader after Memphis. Oh well. I agree with some of your grades but agree with others.

Ball a B - ?. That is a grade that is better than average. I give him a C - at best. No defense and just wants to shoot 3 pointers.

McNeeley a C? That means those 3 games were average for him. What was his shooting %? Can he rebound against a decent team? Defense was pretty bad.

Karaban a B? Maybe I am expecting too much. Please get a tough rebound.

Stewart an A -? Sorry but nobody on our team deserves a grade this high. Something must be going on with him and DH that we don’t know about.

This. We're not a fast, or quick, team out there. Samson Johnson needs to work on staying at home instead of trying for epic blocks EVERYTIME. Giving up way too many free putbacks. Lots of fixable issues, I hope.

Need to win 2 of 3 remaining relevant non-conf (Baylor / TX / Zags) or the non-conference results a disaster.

Find a way to win 2, starting with Baylor at home on Wed....win 2 good non-conf games in next 2 weeks and the Maui results fade to black.

One 'A' mark for the team I would handout.
Our PG play is falling short of giving us the pretty offense we have loved, yet importantly I would give the team an 'A' on limiting turnovers.

Game 1 Memphis only 9 turnovers in 45 min OT game
Starters Karaban, Ball, McNeeley, Mahaney collectively 121 min w/ only 2 turnovers
Reed & Stewart off the bench 45 min 2 turnovers (Stewart 0)
Johnson & Diarra 44 min 5 turnovers
Game 2 Colorado again only 9 turnovers (+1 team turnover in a second box score)
Game 3 Dayton only 5 turnovers
No individual players were turnover prone Diarra with 6 was trying to make things happen

Karaban 1 + 0 + 1 = 2
Ball 0 + 1 + 1 = 2
McNeeley 0 + 2 + 1 = 3
Diarra 3 + 2 + 1 = 6
Johnson 2 + 0 + 0 = 2
Reed 2 + 2 +0 = 4
Mahaney 1 + 1 +0 = 2
Ross 0 +1 +1 = 2
Nowell x + 0 +0 = 0 (19 overall min)

ironically, we started to see some of it in the Dayton game. we're not going to see what we had last year in any stretch, but I started to see omre movement off the ball, more passing, more times finding the right man in the right moment. It's still a step slow, but I think it'll get there.

That was until the team totally mailed it in from the effort department.

My head is still spinning form the loss to Memphis. Until Hurley got the "T" we had come back from a big defecit and showed the heart of a lion. All the flaws noted above had been on display, but we overcame them. Then came the "T", the bottom dropped out and we were never right after that. I also think McNeeley's hip injury impacted his game a lot more than we expected.

We need some lineup mods and improvement in lots of areas, but I don't think we're as bad as 3 losses says we are. Looking forward to seeing where we are in late January.

I do believe that Memphis game was a huge deflator.

I can’t disagree with any of those arguments.

Gave Solo a higher grade because even though all he’s doing is shooting threes, he made 9 of them on 45% including the hero shot to send Memphis to OT. For reference AK also hit 9 on 39%

I put less weight on Liam’s Dayton game because I think he was still injured. He didn’t do well against Memphis but hit those 2 clutch shots at the end. Even with the Dayton donut he averaged 10 PPG and 42.8% from three. He can’t keep anyone in front of him but is the only guy that doesn’t jump on their back and foul them, he keeps his arms up pretty well

Karaban as a B felt high to me too. I wouldn’t argue against anything from a C to B

Stewart had somewhat of a sympathy rating because he deserved more minutes

Mau-I? ISWYDT

All in all, pretty good summary. I’d like to see if Abraham could improve the on ball D, TBH it could hardly be worse - it’s not like Stewart, Ross have bee locking up or perfect on rotations. Maybe give him some run against, oh, MD Eastern Shore, for example.
Really surprised that Ball isn’t a better driver/finisher or defender to this point. Note to him: your game can’t just be 3’s.
Johnson could use an hour in Calhoun’s rebounding drill. Maybe every day.

Overall good but both Diarra and Ball too high. Both were average at best so C max. Ball did shoot well but when you give up more than you score that’s never good. Add he doesn’t rebound as well as he should no chance he’s above C. HD too much giveth and taketh away, needs to make better decisions consistently. All in all you had it nailed. Maybe Reed a little higher wasn’t his fault the HC couldn’t see the bench vs Dayton.

Does anyone have any ideas on why Reed isn't getting 70% of the minutes at center? (unless he is foul trouble)

I don’t know and agree. The Dayton game was puzzling only 14 minutes without any fouls? Can’t happen.
