How can you build an arena that can't hold concerts and other events? Just plain stupid.

We actually have an agreement with the town of Piscataway to not have concerts at the football stadium despite the fact that Springsteen and Bon Jovi would sell it out for a massive profit for the school in about five seconds.

Towns are dumb. So are schools at times.

That is most likely because of noise ordinances. The Comcast center is an enclosed basketball arena that seats over 17,000.

And yes, Gampel has the ability to hold concerts. Rusted Root and Ol' Dirty Bastard played 1999 Spring Weekend there.

Yikes...

>>The commission’s report also expressed concern about Maryland’s ability to compete with better-funded Big Ten teams, even after it begins to receive its full share of revenue from the conference’s lucrative television network in 2020. Maryland’s athletic department currently falls “in the lowest quartile for revenues per student-athlete when compared to its Big Ten peers,” according to the report, which expressed doubt that “the University will reach the per student-athlete spending of our Big Ten peers during the next twelve years,” or until around 2025.<<

Under Armour shakedown?

>>But Loh stressed getting Maryland’s house in order before building any new facilities.“Other people may disagree, but in my mind, providing students with three square meals, having trainers and nutrition and academic support so they can graduate on time, is more important than a shiny, new indoor facility,” Loh said. “Am I supportive of the University of Maryland becoming highly competitive in the Big Ten by having adequate facilities? The answer is yes. And those of us who join me in this will have to step up to the plate and make pledges for an indoor facility<<

The Rent has a noise/decibel level restriction that goes into effect @ a certain time of night.

One of the most maddening things about CR is that Maryland and Rutgers are two of the most historically poorly run athletic programs in the country and are only where they now because of where they are located not how they have performed on the field or financially. This is especially true in Rutgers' case. Even under Hathaway UConn's administration/performance was a shining example compared to the other two.

Does Gampel still hold concerts? I remember attending a few there in the early 90's.

Didn't Biggie perform there in like 1994 during Spring Weekend? or was that outside where Memorial Stadium use to exist?

The 2 that I remember......Public Enemy/Anthrax and Faith No More/Helmet/Spin Doctors.

Don't recall the Biggie concert up there.....but then again the entire year of 1994 is a blur to me anyway.

I believe Biggie and the 'Fugees (featuring Wyclef) visited Memorial Stadium during the 1996 Spring Weekend. Toad the Wet Sprocket was 1994 or 95.

Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds (a few times), Billy Joel and Adam Sandler came to Jorgensen during my tenure in the late 90's as well.

I would agree if not for the night games with train sirens and cannons going off.

I'm sure if you did a summer concert series with Bon Jovi, Springsteen, and lord knows who else and give a certain percentage of the profit to the town they would be fine with. It has to be doable, and its an easy money maker if you just use it sparingly for big concerts.

If it wasn't for Hathaway so desperately wanting to keep his upcoming chairman of the NCAA Men's bb competition commitee spot he would be the AD at UMD. Funny how approximately 18 months later he was out of a job...

My favorite moment at Jorgensen was seeing KRS ONE... He didn't perform just came and spoke one night.. Awesome experience... He showed that Knowledge Reigns Supreme Over Nearly Everybody

All ordinances are not created equal. Some regulate sustained noise, others have different timeframes, while yet others relate to only certain events. I saw Pearl Jam at Great Woods (I mean The Tweeter Center) in 2003. They set out to play every song in their catalogue over the span of 3 concerts (I went on to the July 3 show but have all 3 concerts on CD). The town of Mansfield, MA has an ordinance that goes into effect at 11:00 and Pearl Jam knowingly and willingly blew through it. It was so blatant that Eddie Vedder 1) went so far as to invite the occupants of the nearby trailer park over for the party and 2) changed the lyrics to Yellow Ledbetter to say, " (paraphrased) We'll probably never play this outdoor place again."

I don't know the exact answer. It's just my best guess. I suppose my point is that I can understand why multi-hour rock concerts (The Boss is famous for his 4 hour plus shows) would not be permitted in such a setting. In regard to the Comcast Center, it's not like the place is 60 years old and technology passed it by (Like Cole Field house), It was finished less than 15 years ago.

I don't think I attended any of the Gampel concerts during my time there.
<--------------------------------Wasn't there one with Nelly in 1999 or 2000?

I recall George Clinton and P-Funk and Busta Rhymes at Jorgenson my freshman year - I maneuvered my way onto the concert committee just prior to showtime and got a backstage pass (I had to help pack up the band though, not too bad for a free concert and to meet them). And Jewel too (didn't meet her though).

I was not pointing at UM. The point was how is it even possible to build an arena that physically cannot host other events?

I was refering to SrqHusky's point which I thought meant that UCONN could be in a similiar situation $$ wise as MD if CR finds us in limbo headed to a new home.

Do you think it was intentional of the Washington Post to run a picture of a Maryland defender delivering a blatant cheap shot along with that article? I mean, of all the file photos that had, they used that one?

My freshman year Fall '99 Outkast and Third Eye Blind played at Gampel during Spring Weekend (Spring '00). I wanna say that the next year Nelly did play at Gampel during Spring Weekend. I rememebr I went to X-Lot instead of that concert and was glad I did as my buddy was a big Nelly fan and said they waited an hour + b/c Nelly was super late. I remember either a year or two after that they moved the venue to a "festival" held at Memorial Stadium and Fat Joe played there. I only went to the Outkast/Third Eye Blind concert so I'm not sure when/if they stopped having concerts in Gampel.
