I think we're still all trying to come down back to earth off the B2B to reasonable expectations. We've all annointed Hurley the greatest coach on earth, a mastermind. He's just another good coach. It's the players that do the work. He needs better groceries.

Marquette just pushed UConn, and UConn did not respond with physicality. I think it was more on the players.

Also before today, last five games like 14 pts total with over 20 minutes per game. 5 assists total. Great for a freshman if he was getting 5 minutes a game but he wouldn't see the court much here this year. Would've been a nice piece backing up the 1 and 2 next year though.
 
Of course we'd like the depth, but he is not in the same ballpark as Mullin.
 
I really think they need to revisit the idea of a lineup change when Stewart comes back. You just can’t have two inconsistent chuckers like Mullins and Ball out there together as often as they do, especially when neither one significantly impacts other parts of the game when their shot isn’t falling. AK does a lot of the little stuff that makes him way more impactful than the other two but he’s wildly inconsistent as well.

I find the biggest difference in how the team played the OOC schedule compared to the conference schedule is that the lineup has much better balance when there’s only one of Ball or Mullins on the floor and then one of Ross or Stewart is taking the other minutes.

Not sure what happened with Lewis. Maybe we backed off because we thought he was going to Kentucky? Maybe we already had Silas and Smith signed, not sure about the order of commitments. I wonder if we looked at Nigel James, right in our own back yard in Long Island.

Reed wasn't in much foul trouble in the 2nd half picked up his 3rd foul with 15:39 left and didn't get his 4th foul until 3:27 remaining. He didn't play 2 minutes in that stretch. He took 1 shot and missed it in that 10 minutes. That can't happen. We can't just get perimeter happy with the beast inside and forget him whether we are getting pressured or not. We can pass the ball well enough to get him the ball to him but for some unforeseen reason it didn't happen in the 2nd haf.

I kind of always thought this. Hurley could recruit incredibly well. Get guys he wants. But not sure he evaluates players that well and gets the mix right. He did in 2023 & 24 but not last year and this year it’s hard to say. I remember when Donovan was the wonder kid coach with back to backs at Florida. People then were predicting them to supplant Duke as the perennial favorite. They won zero more Championships. Always had good teams but never great ones. The test for Hurley will be getting #3 with a new cast. Always has been.

How about getting some athletes to mix in with the skilled players we have. Marquette looked a lot more athletic than are team. We don't need top 25 recruits and UConn has never been about building a team of them to be sucessful.

Not bullet proof, but I think we've seen our bottom on 3-pt shooting as a team.

First, Mullins might be better at catch and shoot and if left alone for like 4 seconds at 3 then dribble shoot (rhythm). At least last night it seemed that way. Likely seen his bottom of 3pt pct as well. Maybe hit a few in the arc for a little.

Second, AK - he's having a pretty good year at the 3 and while yesterday he was reminiscent of 2024-2025, it likely is the worst we'll see

Third - we really missed Stewart. His presence and 4-10 pts but good rebounds and good bodying out is what we needed. That would have let the guards not sag on the 3s.

Thats because he is not. If you have to Alex wait for a PG OR Aany guard to come get the ball down 2 with 13 seconds left, well thaf about sums up the game, big east title and season to a degree.

Prob a game to play Malachi and Silas together. Malachi prob has the size and speed to stay in front of James.

Maybe have Mullins stop shooting 3s when he is 1/10.

Malachi can't stay in front of anyone. Granted, neither could Silas this game, but Malachi is not the answer. He was awful, which is why Hurley couldn't play him in the second half.
 
Apparently winning a share of the big east regular season title wasn't that important to them. Hey, if they end up winning another natty all this will be forgotten, but you have to wonder if they will be able to play with urgency in the tourney. There's still time but boy was that disappointing.
 
I am going to finally jump in with my two cents.

The turnovers were awful. Marquette did a nice job on defense, but we were too sloppy with the ball.

We shot 3-23 from deep. The vast majority of them were fantastic looks. Almost all were by our best shooters. We make three more and it’s still a terrible shooting night but we win the game. An average night from deep and it’s a double digit win. Shooting games like that happen, not often but they do and you almost lose every single one of them. It’s not like we shot 40 3’s on the game.

Take some lessons learned, flush all the misses, and move on.

I don’t care what anyone says, with our talent we are still a national championship contender. That’s all I want going into every March.

They carry around cardboard cutouts of trophies with them. Saying it’s not important is a cop out. It obviously is.

Their system and roster construction is what is failing them. It’s why we nearly had 5 other losses as bad as the one Saturday. They have whiffed on too many people they thought highly of leading to no bench, haven’t developed 3-4 year players, and we run an offensive system where a team even with Clingan/Castle etc get outshot at the free throw line by 15 because we just dribble/screen/cut launch a 3.

Playing with urgency hasn’t been a problem. Doing it for 40 minutes? Well yeah. They don’t do that.

Look this game was in the making for a while. Georgetown, Providence, Butler, Hall, all these games they miraculously pulled out in the final minutes. This time the other team made the plays and we didn’t. We could have lost a few earlier but didn’t. And for those who point to St John’s, if you look at our recent body of work, Marquette is more reflective of how we have played than that blow out.
