Marquette Post Game Thread

Yes, as I said earlier the ‘06 team had a lot more talent but had the same maddening tendency to play down to its opponent’s level.
2006 had way more talent.

I don’t consider this a very talented team. I’m be baffled if any NBA franchise drafts AK anywhere near the first round round. He was shut down by Royce Parham today.

If he has a good next few weeks probably. But the questions will start creeping up if he's not shooting more efficiently soon
Mullins really needs to get stronger physically and mentally. The first lesson he needs to master though is the difference between a good shot and a bad one. Just because you’re open doesn’t mean you have to jack up the shot.

Some thoughts on your Solo comments above. Solo primarily provides three-point shooting offense. Thinking about our guards over the last 5 years, he's comparable to Jordan Hawkins, who probably was a more consistent shooter in his second year as a starter. In this, his second year as a starter, in addition to shooting threes, Solo has expanded his game by driving more for layups and taking some pull-ups for twos. Stephon Castle was both a great physical athlete and mature-playing defensive and offensive guard as a freshman. Cam Spencer was a strong-willed veteran and complete starting guard, offensively and defensively. During crunch times in games, Solo appears to have a tendency to quickly chuck up shots, maybe because he's most confident that's his best way to make an impact. Sometime, between the 11 and 4-minute mark in the second half today, while there was still time to pull out a win over Marquette, there were three instances where I felt that Solo hurried up shots (two deep, quick-trigger threes off picks and a pull-up that all unfortunately missed).

As others have mentioned, our players and coaches all seemed to abandon the first half strategy to get the ball to Reed closer to the basket!
i agree solo has poor shot selection, i dont see improvement on his ball driving skills

I believe Silas was part of the problem today not the solution.
Silas was more the solution than the problem. He had 17 pts 8 assists and a 2:1 assist to turnover ratio. His defense wasn't his best, but it was better than anyone else's on the perimeter, FWIW. If you believe he was more of the problem, your entitled to that opinion, but what would you think about the combined performances of Solo, Alex, and Braylon going 6-31 (3-17 3pters)

So folks does it really mean a big deal in the big picture whether we’re a one seed or a two seed in the Big East tournament and March madness? The quality of our opponents is not gonna make that much difference. I get that they played awful today, but please don’t assume that this is a long-term trend with them. Remember the beat down of the Johnies a short time ago.

Alex is not getting drafted anywhere near the 1st round this year, just like last year and the year before. This narrative that he made a mistake staying is just foolish. He didn’t have a choice.

Has Dan Hurley lost this team? They pulled out an absolute stinker of a game where they were playing for, at worst, a share of the BE regular season championship. I’m going to get killed for asking it but it needs to be asked.
I don't think he's lost the team, because we've seen a whole bunch of dud games over the course of the season, including several narrow wins. What I would like to know is, what is the collective mindset of the team, including the coaching staff? How does the #4 team not come fully prepared and engaged for a game such as tonight? Credit to Marquette for continuing to improve over the final stretch of their season, but they should not have been given even an inkling that they could win this game. This UConn team has been wildly inconsistent though, and we never know which team will show up on any given night, and whether they'll squeak out a win against a lesser opponent, lose, or possibly score an occasional dominant victory.

This has been the case in the BE yet they haven’t - if used right Tarris was clear cut first team BE.

This hasn’t been Hurley’s best season.
Not making adjustments to fit his personnel is once again biting Danny. Continuing to start Solo and Mullins is a disaster. That puts two very minus defenders AND gunners on the floor at the same time. I understand he’s a loyal guy but we’ve seen his loyalty hurt the greater good many times. This year is one of those times. He’s given Solo more than enough time to show he’s more than just a volume scorer. He’s failed in return.

Looks like Dan Hurley is fine with riding that crashing rocket right into the ground

I’m salty, but I believe there was some ego involved in regards to just having a system and culture that was superior. He waxed poetically about it to anyone who would listen. But you still need versatile players within that system. We went from having starting lineups with two or three creators to really a lineup with none last year and one this year. You can run the greatest stuff in the world, but you still need players who can make some plays and get down hill. Some said earlier, why didn’t we penetrate and go to the hoop more since our shots weren’t falling? Simple answer is we can’t.

Folks chalking this up as some fluke bad shooting night(against the worst team in the conf no less) that can't happen again are setting themselves up for disappointment. It's happened multiple times, this wasn't a "let's get it out of our system" type performance.
That has been my concern going all the way back to the beginning of January. People on here and Rob Dauster kept saying "oh Solo will pick up his 3pt shooting percentage". My response was, "I hope so, but are you sure?" If people look at the beginning of this season and the BET from last year, he has struggled from 3pt land. You are correct that this team, not just limited to Solo, has gone cold from 3pt land at the same time in multiple games. What concerns me more is that these are wide open looks (i.e. Braylon today). Boog204 said it in his post above which was a cold splash of reality. This team, besides Silas, cannot dribble drive to the basket so they are overly reliant on the 3 pt shooting. If Braylon shoots a smidge under his 3 pt shooting % today, UConn would have been up by double digits in the first half.

I legit have no idea what their identity is, at all. It’s game 31. I don’t know who their go to guy is, what their MO is. It’s a very weird team.
There is no go to guy. Silas can be that next year, but still working through it at the moment.

No real silver lining aside from the fact I already know the team will show up against better opponents, so our identity crisis MIGHT not matter until the Elite 8 or Final 4

Box of chocolates

We don't exactly have a lot of options. Jaylin is out and Ross played 22 minutes, Solo played 24. Ross was a lot less bad than AK, Mullins, and Solo and provided some energy plays but he went back to his bad habit of biting on pump fakes. Malachi has zero confidence.

Mullins got in the paint or low block a few times in the second half and passed it back out. Why no shot? Draw a foul. We place so much pressure on Silas to do everything and no one steps up to do anything but jack 3s. Huge blown opportunity today. Silas and Reed had no help. The coaches never figured out how to burn MQ overplaying our passing lanes and pressing us on the outside. We missed Stewart giving Karaban a rest. MQ wanted it way more than UConn. Embarrassing.

Correct. Starting Ross over Ball would be the move and screw with opponents plans. But we all know Hurley will not do it.
