Marquette Post Game Thread

This game was on regular NBC, free over the air NBC, not Peacock.
I live in Texas and I have Fubu. All of our games on regular TV are automatically saved. For whatever reason, this game was not on regular NBC for me, only Peacock. I actually was able to watch the game last night, as peacock made it the replay available.

Y'know what's amazing about this program to me? Forty years now of team ball with a good bunch of guys. Sure, a few hiccups over the years, but just a few. I mean look at Castle, he's the point guard on an NBA title contender. But for UConn he played a different role to help the team win a championship. We've had 40 years of that! Well, maybe 37 accounting for some slow buy-in at the start. Other programs just don't compare.

Who else plays the game of doing a shot every time hooperscooper corrects a mistake 😂
Are you trashed everyday?! 😂

I usually only correct names on the team. It's the least we could do is call the players by their correct names and spell them right. There are only 15 guys on the team and I won't even count the 2 European guys because they don't play much and even I need to look up the names before mentioning them. So 13. Still amazes me that some people spell the last names wrong. The other day I saw Reed, Reid, and Read. Really? I mean how many times do we see these guys play (their names are on the back of their jerseys for God's sake!), their names are on the graphics on the telecasts, their names are in the media, their names on here, etc.? I guess some people are either really bad spellers or have terrible recall. I guess that is a fact of life.

O.K. rant over. 😀

It seems people these days really don't care about spelling, generally. ☹️ I agree with you!

I was avoiding working, so double-speeded through the Marquette game to see what our offense does with Malachi running point. The dude doesn't want to dribble around. The sets where he is in isolation with the ball are very, very slow to materialize. Far too detailed breakdown below.

For the "Malachi Sucks" contingent.

He enters around 12:20 in the video.
Pretty much right away, he commits a turnover on the oob play. It's just a terrible set and even worse execution. So he'll get the TO in the stat column, but c'mon, that's the best we can do?

at 24:19, we get the first Malachi dribbling around a lot example. But watch off the ball. You've got AK setting a pointless screen and slip to run into a missed screen by Reibe, who then turns to set a screen for Solo. Solo is briefly open, but continues running straight at Smith, creating abysmal spacing, so there's nothing there. So at this point, Malachi has been dribbling for basically 10 seconds b/c nothing is happening in the set.

Secondary action is another high screen by Reibe that the defender jumps, so Malachi spins off of it to penetrate and hit AK, who is open through a screen by Stew, who in turn gets the nice pass for the dunk. So in total, Smith was dribbling around for about 13 seconds, but really only because the offense took so long to develop.

Next offensive possession at 25:30 or so, has Solo starting the set before giving to Malachi, who uses a Tarris screen for space and gets AK the ball, who goes by his man for a dunk.

Around 29:35, you see Malachi get fouled on a drive to the hoop, which looks somewhat out of control. But again, watch the set. AK slips a screen. Then it's a high PNR with Tarris that Gold jumps because we have been scouted, and everyone knows that Tarris is not a threat 30 feet from the hoop, and the other three guys are standing still.

Smith leaves and reenters at around 35:20, and the offense flows fine the rest of the half, with a highlight being his drive and dish to Tarris

Second half, Silas commits his 98298th foul, and Smith comes in at 54:45 and the offense flows fine, other than we are missing shots and are just sloppy. I counted three good passes that were fumbled by AK and Reibe from Malachi.

At 1:05, Malachi gets the ball from Mullins with 5 on the clock for a PNR. They hedge and double Smith. Stew is open, but that would've been a very difficult play to make, at his size and angle, with only 3 seconds on the clock. Smith misses the jumper badly.

1:08, Malachi dribbles around for 15-20 seconds before AK springs open. That set is very, very long to develop. Not a Smith issue. Screen after screen just to get AK off the curl. There is nobody presenting as a passing option.

1:13, again, a lot of dribbling. At this point, at least in this game, the issue is that the sets have a lot of moving parts that are happening off the ball. There's literally nobody for Smith to give the ball to, with two guys setting screens for no one and Mullins and Solo waiting at the three-point line.

Maybe it is just my 1960s education but spelling and grammar are important.

Since it is being discussed are we too lazy to use proper words like national championship or championship instead of natty or chip?

To me a chip is a something I eat, a computer component or what I lose at the casino

This is the definition I see for Natty:

nat·ty1
/ˈnadē/

adjective
informal

  1. (of a person or an article of clothing) smart and fashionable.
"a natty blue blazer and designer jeans"

For the three or four posters here who felt the need to be critical of my spelling error which in fact was not a spelling error, it was a mistake owned. Rest assured that I am in general very careful when posting in particular with respect to people’s names. I didn’t check the computer’s version of Demary’s name. I was a history/english teacher for many many years. I value spelling a great deal. Can I still watch the game tonight or am I still suspended?

I always try to get names right. But I don't know about anyone else but my new phone auto-corrects stuff all the time before I catch it.
