@GravettMatt: Just caught up with Malik Newman, the country's best player. He lists UCONN, Texas, Kansas, and Kentucky as those after him the hardest.

@GravettMatt: Malik Newman says that he and Diamond Stone are 100% committed to being a package deal and that they talk about playing together every week.

Lol Uconn, Kansas, and Kentucky... Yikes what a battle this'll be

If these two draw out their recruitment, I don't see UConn landing either of them. There's plenty of talent that KO is going after that he's not going to wait for 2 elite players, especially when he's going up again KU and UK.

If it's going to happen, we'll land them early in the process. If not, we'll land some very good recruits that will hopefully stick around a lot longer than these two. If it's going to be only one year of those two, I think I'd prefer to land some other players that are ranked somewhere in the top 30 or so that will wear the UConn uniform for at least 2 years, hopefully three to four while winning us a national championship or two along the way.

I don't mind adding one 1 year player if that elite one puts us over the top. But I don't want UConn to turn into UK. I enjoy rooting for our players for multiple years, and I don't want to see that change.

Not sure if Kentucky is not an option for the combo. Diamond Stone will be looking elsewhere than Kentucky because of the horde of big men there. I know 2 or 3 will declare early after this year but that still leaves another 2 centers already there.

This. The only schools that have offered both Newman and Stone are UConn and Kansas.

If he wants to play in the best conf in college hoops he'll come here

Or if he wants to play in the NBA dleague he'll go to UK

I think it is going to be us or kentucky

I'm pretty sure that's the first time ever that SEC basketball has been compared to the NBA Dleague.

Kansas and Kentucky won't stop recruiting either while these kids contemplate their decision so we have a chance. But everything being equal, we have a 66.6% chance of not landing them so it shouldn't be a shock if they go elsewhere. It would be great if we get them though.

I think Ollie has to take the first guys who say yes and wait on no one. Ollie has good coaching skills and an ability to communicate that leads me to feel that he is better off taken a lesser player he can coach for three years than a guy who is on a pit stop to the NBA.

The Squid won't know how many ships will be available till next spring which lends itself to going after the elite players who seem to be waiting late in the process these days.

But you do have a point in that UK is on a lot of top recruits, and if Cal gets commits from some other highly ranked ballers he might not be willing to wait on that pair either. Though I think he's more likely to wait longer on them than KO. A lot might depend on how much of a perceived drop off there is between these two and the alternatives for the programs that are pursuing them.

Why wouldn't his coaching and communications skills be equally effective with both?

Pretty sure Cal will just take guys regardless, even if way over the scholarship limit, no matter where they are time-wise in the process. He'll just get rid of guys on his bench that he doesn't want. Of course, it does take the kid saying yes to come to loaded roster, but Cal's never had trouble with that in the past.

Some excerpts from an article on him over on Rivals:

On Diamond Stone:
"He's like a big brother to me," Newman told Rivals.com. "He's one of the top players in the country and I'm one of the top players. We have a very good bond from the beginning of USA Basketball so we are just trying to carry that on to college."

Comparisons:
Viewed primarily as a scorer, Newman has often reminded Rivals.com of a young Ben Gordon type player. He is a streaky jump shooter with deep range, a high release and explosive athleticism when he chooses to attack the rim. He's always confident and he is also surprisingly strong and tough with the ball.

On cutting it down to 5 schools soon:
Newman does have a target date for setting up a list and an idea of how many will make his official list. Player development and longevity on the professional level will also factor into his decision.

"By the end of the summer, I want to be down to five," said Newman. "I'll look at the players around and the players that are coming back. Also the development of their players and how long they stay in the league."
