Malachi Smith undergoes knee procedure, back in August

“Minor” but is going to miss a month of practice? Yeah get Alec ready for real minutes this season.
Steph's meniscus procedure put him out of action for about a month back in the 23-24 season. Malachi's clock is probably shortened in regards to long-term playing potential if this his 2nd procedure but in the short term it hopefully shouldn't be a major deal.

Furphy is rumored to be the answer to many of our questions. Hopefully, that’s the case. Another complete player in the mold of Newton, Cam, Alex and McNeeley. I tend to believe it because I know that’s the type of player Hurley is always seeking.

I don’t think we go through without injury but Hurley has designed this roster to handle that. We need at least 1 point guard though.

Don't love that. He has a pretty serious injury history, including a torn meniscus in his knee. Hopefully he pounds the playbook over the next 2 months.
I don't love it either, but it's better now than after the season started. Studying the playbook is going to be even more important for him because UConn's offense is complex and tough to learn and it will be even tougher for him because he will lose a little over a month on executing the offense's motion on the court.

Aren't they on break from practicing for a stretch now? Back in August?

They are still in the first summer session which ends July 3. Then they can go home until the second summer session starts July 14, and that goes until August 15. Then they can go home again until the fall semester begins August 25.

Hope not, but his injury history has me nervous.

Was actually thinking Furph might step in there over Alec. His PT/development is a higher priority to the staff than Millender
I don’t think we brought in a player of Alec’s caliber to be a 4th string at his only position. But it’d be awesome if Furphy was ready to run our offense after never being a point guard before.

Furphy is supposed to be a super fundamentally sound player with great instincts on the court. He’s not a pg but has pg qualities. Based on what you can find out about him and see online, he should be ready to play some sort of role. The question will be whether or not the speed of the game at this level puts him on his heels at first or not. He is coming in known as a composed and cerebral player. I have hopes he’s one of those guys that finds minutes, I love the guys that make open shots and set the table for others. At a solid 6’6” 220 and close to 19 years old, he’s more physically ready than an average frosh.

I don't think Furphy is more physically ready than an average freshman. He's not skinny, but he lacks serious strength like most freshman. He's got a lot of baby fat on him.

So he and Alec will switch places. This is why depth is important. Can they go get that third center already.
I suggested him back in April, but Malcolm Wilson of Queens (NC) is still available.

Remember him from Georgetown? He landed at Queens and finished last season as the Big South Defensive Player of the Year, finishing the season averaging 5.2p, 5.5r, 3.3b(!!!) per game in just 22 minutes per game. 7'0 215.
