Maine Transfer Issac Vann visiting UConn on 4/18

Sounds great tcf!

A lot of balls in the air, but since we have 3 I don't mind a transfer that sits out.
+Thomspon or 5th year 4
+ Vital or combo who can handle and shoot.

If he was asked to carry the team, you'd have a point. But he won't be -- he'll be coming into a program with two borderline 5-star PGs (Adams & Gilbert) and multiple high 4-stars at each spot.

Give me a specialist who we know will be around for 3 years and can hit the shot. I don't care what program he comes from.

And Jamar Wilson was the guy killing our 06 team in the first round of the NCAA tourney as a 16 seed. I'm sure at that point people were saying they would love a guy like Wilson on UConn's team.

Miller was not an unknown. Just the opposite. I doubt this kid would have as big an impact, but we do need his skill set and we always need reliable depth at guard. If he's a character guy and we have space, why not.

I doubt he is more than a 5-10 min guy.
 
I don't follow recruiting close enough to know the answer to his, but since he's a transfer he wouldn't be able to play until 17-18. Are there no other better targets at his position left in the high school class of 18?
 
He only shot 51 threes this season and averaged one make per game, gotta pump the breaks on saying he's a sharpshooter. Love that he gets to the line though. I trust KO to pick a good player. Does the NCAA still give exceptions for moving closer to home, which would make him eligible for next year?

Nope, his program upgraded to the CAA not because of him, that invite to NU and BU (who stupidly rejected) was extended before his sophomore year at NU and was in the works long before that.

Its not about being known or unknown, but this guy is making the argument that if you played at a terrible program and/or at a lower then you can't be any good or contribute to a higher level program, despite mountains of evidence to the contrary and Miller is a prime example.

Reread my arguments, I never once made any declarative statement that players from bad programs absolutely cannot be impact players at higher-level programs. I expressed skepticism that we were targeting a transfer from a garbage program, but multiple times said that if the coaching staff had some kind of read on this kid, or scouted him and deemed him a diamond in the rough then great.

So you're insinuating that he became a better player by playing against better competition? Like he would be at UConn?

It's like the concept of depth is lost in this guy. No one is saying he's gonna average 16 and 6 for us, but the idea this kid could play a specific role, or at least be a solid third string winger is not ridiculous.

No, what I'm saying is he was a good player. Good players exist at lower-level programs, I never said they didn't. If you can find me the other Northeastern players who've gone on to the NBA in recent years, that'd be great. Matt Janning's doing real well over in Europe. The point is, once again, I'm skeptical that a kid who a year ago chose Maine over Monmouth and Fairfield is suddenly a target of UConn. Take the kid's own words to his coach a couple of weeks ago - he felt he was better suited for the MAC or A10. Don't mind my skepticism that we're suddenly targeting him to presumably take up a scholarship a year from now, with other '18 recruits still on the table.

Fine if that's the goal for the coaching staff on him, then cool maybe he can fit in there. But don't mind me for not getting all psyched about a kid transferring in to be a reserve who may only see five or eight minutes a game.
 
When we played Maine the board put them down as a disaster.
Yes they were a bad team but mostly due to being very young,not talent.
I thought with a couple of years experience the players I saw would have been a very respectable team in their conference, if they stayed together.
Apparently this freshman was the best player on that team which gives you an idea of their youth.
Apparently this kid has some ability and sitting a year will only helps that transition.
However
I think we need some help next year so unless we're losing someone else I don't want to waste a scholarship unless the kid is a game changer or can play right away.
The thought that the NCAA would approve a hardship waiver for a CT kid transferring to UConn is a reach but then again they like KO much better than they liked JC.

Thank you for better making my point than I did above! Him being on record as saying he wanted to transfer to the MAC or A10 makes the hardship waiver pretty difficult to fathom.

Am I wrong that we have no other signed recruits for fall '17 other than Brown? With the two 3s coming in this fall, the roster isn't bare at that spot in 17 with Purvis gone. But at the same time, do we want to drop a scholarship spot this soon on him? I'm not sure.

Yeah lets discount everyone from a less than top 50 program because everyone knows there are no such thing as capable players participating in non P5 schools and NEVER does a "player"
come out of those schools and D2 or D3.

Issac on your way down - just bypass Storrs and continue to Hartford (Trinity), Middletown (Wesleyan), New Haven (Albertus) or Danbury (WesConn)

At this point, there are 5 scholarships open for the 2017 season.

G: Jalen Adams, Alterique Gilbert
F: Terry Larrier, Vance Jackson, Mamadou Diarra, Juwan Durham
C: Zach Brown, Steven Enoch

Given that there are 5 spots remaining, adding Vann will not have any impact on their main recruiting targets for 2017 (Makai Ashton Langford, Hamidou Diallo).

One year from now we will have 5 open scholarships and will only have 2 wings on the roster with Larrier and Jackson. Between this year and next year we will probably add 3 more wings. Hopefully Hamidou Diallo is one of them, but we still have 2 more spots for Brandon Randolph/Issac Vann/Alpha Diallo, etc. This is not a make or break scholarship

Sounds good. Then if they want to target him as a reserve who can potentially blossom into a more regular contributor, then go for it.

Come on dude, that is a selective quote! Did you even read the rest of my post, or did you stop after my "attention-grabbing" first sentence?

I'd have absolutely no problem with Vann - if he were a grad transfer. But he isn't, which is why the Miller comparison everyone is throwing around isn't as great of a fit as people may want it to be.

I don't want to use a scholarship on a regular transfer who is unproven right now. We need depth for NEXT year, not a couple years down the road.

We've only got 3 guards on the roster at the moment; one who may already have a foot out the door while the other 2 are underclassmen. Our priority right now should be a PG/CG that can play next year, not a 2/3 shooting specialist from a low-major who won't be eligible until 2017.

Just my 2¢. It's ok to disagree, but please respond to all parts of my argument and not just being selective. You're a much better poster than that, Matrim.
 
i like this kid. he looks the part - well built and athletic. i remember telling myself during the Maine game that i wished we recruited guys like him. he'll be a good practice player for a year and should be able to contribute off the bench as a 22 year old soph.
 
I live right down the road from the Maine Black Bears and the only thing I will say is that Maine the past couple years in particular, has had all of their best talent transfer out. They have a guy who will be playing for Kansas State next year named Justin Edwards that will be pretty good. I think Isaac Vann looked pretty good to me, when I saw him play. Sometimes I go to their games because they are cheap and highly accessible for me. It would be a nice get for future roster depth. I do not think he could be a starter, with the influx of talent coming in, but I do think that he may be on the talent level of Lasan Kromah by his senior year.
 
Where is the downside? He has proven he can score on the college level. Hopefully, he has proven he can do college level academics.
He should have proven that he can balance study with playing. His role on the team would be similar to Giffey's or Kromah's.
He wants to play for us. So, should we will pass on him for yet another imaginary player who is destined to be the next MJ?
