Mahaney

It seems like the crowd is always extra loud when Mahaney hits a shot. Almost as if they all know how important he is, and that he can get there but just needs confidence. That’s at least my read, the biggest issue with him is confidence, he needs to get his swagger back. Let’s hope he’s gotten it back for good after last game.

There’s a big difference between Spencer and Joey C. In any event, he’s been neither - but I still think he can provide valuable minutes. Hopefully, the last couple of games have boosted his confidence. I still maintain that he’s talented enough to give us Joey C like minutes in the post season.
He is a little different than either of those players IMO.

The exact skills Mahaney has at the top of his game, can elevate us to make a deep run in the tournament,

We're missing the player than can drive, distribute, Handle the ball under "face guarding" D and score 10-12 points per game. One added skill needed DEFENSE. He can't get burned on D time after time in the single elimination games we've got coming up from here on out.

I don't think we need him draining 3's, we've got Ball and Alex for that.

We just need Mahany to be the Mahaney we recruited and I think we've seen shades of that in the last 2 games.

This whole idea of him needing to chuck up shots, I'm not quite there. The idea of him not turning the ball over, playing Defense, driving.dishing lane and taking shots he feels comfortable taking, I'm okay with that.

We looked better with him on the floor the last couple of games. He's finding his way and I'm good with that.

We’ll need him - I take the battled tested junior who still looks very engaged over the checked out Freshmen all day.

I agree he's looked much better of late. But when you say we need Mahaney to be Mahaney -- that necessarily involves him shooting the ball more. He took 7 threes a game last year. Of course we don't want him shooting at that frequency -- but he's passing up open threes (and he passed up one especially egregious open mid-range jumper recently). He should have the confidence to knock down those open shots. He's more than capable.

What the hell is “play strength”? I can just imagine Bill Murray asking Luke what play strength is.
When you’re guarding a guy and he uses his shoulder to create space for a layup or floater in the lane, do you get pushed back and give up an easy bucket or are you able to hold your ground and contest?

The debate of Mahaney and Nowell has been over for awhile. I’d like him to play with assertiveness especially attempting to drive. He’s smart enough to be able get assists if he gets shut down.

Mr. Mahaney is the author of the best-selling book Nothing But Net (McGraw Hill, 2022).

He received his B.A. in political science and history from Amherst College, his M.A. from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and his MBA from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School. He is also the former lead bassist for Monkey Funk.

Mr. Mahaney lives in Lafayette, California, with his wife, Tammy, and they have 10 children.

(yikes)

So his family is rich and (probably) religious. Wouldn't have expected that.

On defense hopefully Mahaney isn’t the only one guarding the hoop. On offense, I don’t know what games you’ve been watching but I’ve seen him weasel his way in and score under the basket or get fouled on the attempt, many times.

He can get to the hoop but I’d posit his success rate isn’t as high as it should be from that range. He misses a bunch

Without question the best game of the season. Looked like a different player out there. A no no yes moment when he didn't kick out to Jstew and instead finished high off the glass...impressive. He also did have a couple of nice passes. Just needs to give us this type of game every night.

Well, actually, it’s been kind of a slow progression and I believe it’s been two or three games now and it’s trending upwards. It’s not like he started out great and then hit the skids. This is more of a player that’s developing slower than we all expected, but as I’ve posted here before, if it happens in March, that’s fine with me.

He's still getting bullied, but he's accepted he has to continue to fight out there at all times.
The posession when he played great defense and the ref bailed Nova guy out was useful in setting the tone. Nova did a bunch of ISO stuff, but they didn't try to pick on him much after that.

I am sure it's been said already, but that second half was some of Neptune's finest work....a true dumpster fire to behold!

UConn runs a complex offense and Mahaney has gotten PT lately and it’s starting to click for him. He looked comfortable, not tentative tonight. He’s turning a corner and if the shooting we know he has comes in then watch out.

Either we won because we played better or because Kyle Neptune is a terrible coach. Which is it? I say it's the former. If there is something to blame Neptune for, it's playing only 6 guys for the entire game, save for 3 minutes from Jordan Dumont. You do remember they beat us once this year and that we had to come back to beat them the other time, right? I knew 'Nova wouldn't be able to keep up the level of intensity on defense they displayed in the first half with such a lack of depth and that eventually the levee would break if we continued to limit Dixon and force Poplar to his weak side and got into rhythm on offense.
