Maggie Vanoni on UConn's Open Practice

Her remarks on Kaliegh and Caroline are unexpectedly positive. In Maggie's view they were the two standouts. Her brief Yanna comment also caught my attention. Only Blanca's non-participation was a bit disappointing.

Stay healthy, stay together and "just win baby"! What an interesting season is in the offing.

Will there be a better front court in the country than Jana, Serah and Sarah? A back court full of quality depth enables "40 minutes of hell" pressing possibilities, especially if they "go small(er)" and pull Jana for Caroline, Ash, Blanca or Yanna.

Geno's got a 15 blade Swiss Army knife to play with... so excited to see what he does with it.

Gotta wonder if they are taking it slow with her as wasn't she playing until recently?

Adding the quotes here for those that don't have access

“Caroline is always day to day,” Auriemma said. “We will go out there, and Caroline will go and she will look great for the whole day. Then you go in and ‘Today Caroline is not going to go.’ Then for three days in a row, she goes and it is great.”

“Compared to where we were last year at this time, total 180,” Auriemma said. “How long we can keep that going, I think it is going to be determined for her and for us. I tell you what, I am kind of counting on her being available. How much, I don’t know. But I am counting on her being available.”

His comments align with what the team has been saying for almost 2 years at this point, so I don't thinks its cause for alarm. I think a lot of fans (myself included) thought her playing days were over, so any playing time is a plus from this outsiders' perspective. It sounds like she is still dealing with symptoms and the team is prioritizing her longterm health, which is the right decision. I'm just so happy that playing again is an option for her, even at a reduced level.

The problem with anyone with concussion history (and the neck (and back) issues are similar) is that it remains a day to day issue for the rest of your career - you can do everything to alleviate the current problem, but the susceptibility to injury cannot really be corrected in most cases. You may never have another problem, but it is often just a matter of luck. (My second back surgery was a result of a sneeze!)

It is one reason that I wonder if Geno will 'trust' Caroline to be a starter, while her talent may mean he still gives 25+ minutes. Replacing a starter due to injury is more disruptive to the team than replacing a major contributor off the bench. I believe he will have other viable players to start with less history of injury to choose from.

On 'hockey line' substitutions - he actually did some of that in the Olympics when he had a very talented 12 person roster and I could see some of that happening with this roster. And hockey line substitutions are often done with the 'forward unit' of 3 or the 'defensive unit' of 2 players - and that kind of unit change, two forwards or two guards with the wing being included with either might happen not infrequently. It allows players to develop special chemistry together that they might not develop as well if they were mixing and matching piecemeal. It is what happens quite a lot in blow-outs anyway where end of bench players learn to play together, but with the talent and depth on this team I expect that time will be more productive, too.
