Luke Murray and BC?

Think about it. Every time we have a smart player (like Cam Spencer) this place says “we should hire him on the coaching staff!!!” Syracuse did just that.
Most of the Cuse alums down here love the GMac hire

Casual fans will always love the program legend hire. I’m not sure how much thought there is behind those takes other than “hey I remember him!” and “he almost beat Duke!”

I'd imagine that Luke is all set financially and he's not going to chase a salary increase... So, if I'm Luke I would wait for a better situation than BC because it's really not a program that is set up for success and he'll be constantly toiling away in the cellar to maybe middle of the ACC if the BC donors step up in a really big way after they've been asked to step up for football. I think that's the current sticking point and will continue to be going forward and thats what I would fear the most - will an initial donor commitment increase contine after a brand new head coach goes through 3 seasons of 12 to 15 win seasons? And, what resources does BC commit to the rest of the coaching staff because as a brand new head coach I'd want a really good staff around me. I'd be thinking long and hard if I was him on that and I'm sure he is.

Luke gets his 5-6 years of experience and is a better candidate to replace Dan Hurley when he retires
Yeah, I get all that but 5-6 years is an eternity and you can always have discussions with him along the way but it just seems so contrived that it has little chance of happening.

Don't do it Luke, we love you

Pay him more, if that helps

PS: I know good assistant coaches get poached, and I know he wants to be the guy. We're lucky to keep our staff as long as we have

College basketball is certainly not the only game in town here in Boston, but I think a better to phrase it rhetorically is "is college basketball even a game in town here?". Boston College is beyond irrelevant here and they really don't have good fan support and very little commitment to NIL is going towards that team.

Selfishly I want to keep Luke Murray. Unselfishly, I want the best for Luke Murray if he is seeking a head coaching job. Boston College ain't the one he should make the leap to. If he does, I will support his decision FWIW.
Ironically, Boston is known for being a ‘college town’.
Right now BC is in a deep trough athletically. I can see why they would want someone like Murray.

If Luke is getting the commitments he needs, he could be the one to turn that program around. I’m sure Dan is providing his input here as well.
Hate to see him leave. Surprised he and Young have stayed this long.

Twenty years ago, BC was a job that you could win some years. I'm not sure that is the case now. In 2015, BC was the only school that voted against increasing the student athlete stipend in a 79-1 vote and they have been late to fully fund revenue sharing. And, their NIL infrastructure is lacking and it doesn't seem they are 100% in. Fan support has collapsed.

If I were Murray, I would go to a mid major school that has a winning culture. You win for a couple of years, gain some expereince as a head coach, and you can move to better job than BC.

What mid major strikes you as a good job?
Syracuse 🤣

I tend to agree with going Midwest mid-major as your first coaching gig. An alumni base that’s usually just as enthusiastic, more patient and willing to spend and attend. And definitely more opportunity to make the tourney, which gives you that springboard to the next/bigger job. you’ll never make the tourney from the bottom of the major conferences.

BCU is not a good job. They have no pull in their conference and have success rate that has been in the toilet for decades.

I don't want to lose him, as I think he's Hurley's successor. That said, I think he could go to BC and if they invest properly in the program, win there. That would still position him to return to UConn when Hurley is done. I know we all see BC as a bad job, but it's an excellent school in a good league and there's no reason the right coach can't win there with the new AD and President supporting athletics.

Seems like a damn good hire to me.
I'm not sure it's damn good but might be good. Where my head is at that given 5-7 years ago the Syracuse job and program were definitely top 20 and now it's not even top 40. Hire alumni at your potential peril; it shuts you off from so many really good and proven coaches.

They need donors, too so the jury is out. And recruiting has to then rise big time. Lots of hope for BC fans, but until it's actually pulled off it is simply that - hope.

I see no reason that BC can't be Wake Forest. They are such similar schools but BC has almost double the undergrad enrollment. Wake makes some noise and nobody talks about it being a graveyard job. BC was a decent job in the past. They have the resources to make a decent job again.

I'm assuming Luke could have jumped to a head coaching job in the past, but he wanted to find the right one. So, if he takes the BC job, I'll assume he got evidence of the school supporting the program with new administration. I hope he turns them into an adequate ACC team that sneaks into a tournament or two and then breaks their hearts when he leaves for something better.

No one is expecting him to win the ACC, simply get them to reasonable. He's 80 miles up the road, I would think it's very much a way of staying close and see it as warm up to coming back.

I dread alumni hires - how often do they work? They just went through one unsuccessfully. At least he has 2 years of HC experience (not nearly enough), unlike Autry.

It is almost universally a bad idea, unless they have a significant coaching resume.

Honestly, it speaks to the strength of our program that even our failed nepotism hire won a national championship.

Murray would be making a huge mistake taking the BC job.

Athletically, it's the worst P4 school by a wide margin, and it's not because of bad luck. It's the place where careers go to die.

Pros:
Good conference - Can recruit to play at Duke, at UNC, etc. Can earn credibility quicker than at a midmajor.
Opportunity - Nowhere to go but up. Very easy to get better results.

Cons:
Recruiting - Going to be tough to get players with UConn, PC, St Johns, Seton Hall closeby.
Fan Base - The athletic department is flat lined there for student support. They literally can't give away free tickets.
Good conference - They're going to get their tails kicked for a while. They were 16th in the ACC this season.

I would like to think he deserves a better gig and he's been patiently waiting for his shot. As a homer, I think he's better off staying here at least another year but I wouldn't fault him if he took it.
