UConn commit one win from state

UConn commit Kyle Schafenacker started at left tackle and helped St. Thomas Aquinas stun the nation's top-ranked high school team on Friday night.

St. Thomas Aquinas ran for four touchdowns behind a dominating effort from Schafenacker and the offensive line to defeat Manatee 35-18 in the FHSAA 7A semifinals on Friday. Next up is Lincoln, which defeated Kissimmee Osceola, in the Dec. 14 state championship game as the Raiders go for their fourth state title in the last six years.

Schafenacker is a tough, nasty competitor with the playing strength and strong hands needed to control and knock defenders off the ball when drive blocking. Is very effective as a swing tackle however we feel his size and athleticism are best suited for the offensive guard position at the major level of competition. His frame appears capable of supporting additional body mass over time. Although we detect some lower body stiffness when playing out of a two and three point stance his agility and balance allows him to play on his feet in space; demonstrates good tight box mobility along with the ability to adjust his feet to handle quick change of direction movement. This prospect comes off the ball aggressively, showing the explosive pop and surge needed to knock defenders back on their heels. Establishes the pad level and base necessary to gain and sustain an immediate advantage; his persistent leg drive allows him to consistently finish blocks with crushing results. Demonstrates the ability to reach for leverage on offset defensive linemen while showing he can consistently get a hat on active 1st and 2nd level defenders. This lineman has the physical tools necessary to make all the run blocks at the next level. His upper body playing strength and quick hands should be assets in pass protect; displays good short set ability; can bend and slide while flashing double read potential. We like his initial punch and location however all areas of hand use will need refinement. This prospect displays the athleticism needed to get out of trouble and recover when on an island. Schafenacker does not appear to be an immediate starter at the BCS level of play; early playing time while providing depth isn't out of the question if a red shirt year is not deemed necessary.
