The fact that she is in a boot and mobile is a good sign. I broke the 5th metatarsal on each foot about 5 years apart. The first was a simple break and all the doc did for me was wrap it in jock tape and tell me to try to stay off it. I went right back to work which required quite a bit of walking. A bit painful for a couple of days but not a big deal.
The 2nd break was an impact break from a fall and it was a pain. The doctor debated surgery and finally decided to just put it in a cast but I had to stay off it (crutches) for a couple of weeks.
All this was pre - boot days. Seeing KLS walking around in a boot w/o crutches leads me to believe that the break wasn't too serious.

Wbb, that's the same that I have read...............Timing is good because now she can wear a walking boot and has to do no running. Just give it time to heal. Many NBA and NFL players have had the same
injury and just gave it time and came back after about 2 months. Fortunately Katie Lou can give hers even more time.

My daughter fractured her ankle over in July...doing what else, playing basketball. She was in a soft cast for 2 weeks, then a walking boot for about 4. She was able to shed the boot before going away to school. Was cleared to play in October, right before the season started. Although she couldn't run or jump, she was able to shoot. And no, she didn't need surgery.
I think Lou will be ready to go for the summer.

I fractured my ankle years ago in a pick up game (one of the other players was a med student who told me it wasn't broken. He did not go into orthopedics). I was put in a cast and used crutches and told to go easy on jumping for a while afterward. Since I couldn't jump before the injury, it was not a particular hardship.
I'm not a medical type person.... Is this type injury an indicator of a bigger issue or does it just happen sometimes and there is nothing to worry about?
From watching the game it look like there wasn't any contact that would cause the break... it just randomly broke when she came down from jumping up for a rebound.
Hope to see Lou comes back strong, she is going to be very key player for the team next year.

The strange thing for a layman to absorb is that it was reported to be the 3rd metatarsal - right smack dab in the middle of her arch. Believe that it was self reported by Lou to have happened when she went up, not coming down.

The initial video ESPN showed was of the wrong play at the very end of the first half. It wasn't until the NC game that they actually showed the likely moment that it occurred - a offensive rebounding play about a minute in - Samuelson was boxed out and you could see the heal of a player landing right in the middle of her foot, presumably on the third metatarsal.
That she was able to play on it for 17 more minutes without serious discomfort suggests it was a 'clean' and 'non-displaced' fracture - the bone likely remain in proper alignment and it was a single break with no splinters or secondary damage/soft tissue damage.
That the break likely occurred due to a sudden impact and not as a stress reaction likely means bone density, overuse, bad alignment, or other more 'chronic' condition is not involved - all good signs.
And yes, I slept at a Holiday Inn Express - I sure ain't no doctor!

Sounds like our Lou is on the way back, and "the way" is relatively uncomplicated. While this is a very good thing, surgery on a 3rd (or 5th) met is no big deal anymore. It is typically microsurgery, with recovery times that are equal or less than non-surgical options. My dear Mrs. Bigbird has managed to break the 5th met on each foot, about a year apart. Yeah, I know. Anyway, the second time, they did a helical wire wrap technique to give extra support. In both cases, she was in good shape in 8-10 weeks. And she was in her late 50's. So a young person would have likely been a faster heal, as seems to be the case with Lou. Wishing her the very best. We are going to love the next three years with her.
