LOUDEST crowd ever...

watching it on TV didnt help, you had to be there!

That game is pretty much the standard against which all others are judged. Twenty-two years later, it's still the loudest.

I think it's a wash between that one and Kansas in 97.

During our 17-3 run, there were 2 instances, Lamb's three and Ryan's steal/dunk that my ears were crackling from the noise...great times!

I'm a little perplexed about not selling out against a pretty good BE team. UConn crowds can be so great it's a little frustrating when they underwhelm. I would say that the style of basketball hasn't been that pretty the last few years so it's a tad "harder" to get into it as it was when BG was raining 3's or people were dunking all over the place.

.-.
How has Jan. 22, 2005 - #17 Pittsburgh Panthers at #13 UConn Huskies - not been brought up yet?

It was the first College Gameday for basketball EVER, there was a blizzard outside and 75% of Gampel was made up of students who bought back season seats from people who couldn't make it.

I know we lost that game but it was hands down the loudest game I've ever been at. Oh Freshman year....

I guess the students weren't loud enough though. We blew a 14 pt 2nd half lead to Troutman and company. See???..they really need to play all the big games at the XL.... ;)

Texas when Chris Mihm was their center. I was in the 200 level and none of us sat down the whole game.
I've been to all of the games mentioned and in my opinion the loudest crowd was against VCU in the NIT in 1988 at the old field house. By far the loudest crowd I have ever experienced at any sporting event.

I agree

Ya thats the loudest game i've ever been too. Such a great game regardless of the outcome.

I agree that the unexpected win over GTown by the Dream Team was easily the loudest that place can possibly get, but last night wasn't too shabby. I haven't had that much fun in person at a UConn game in a long time.

ETA: Do I feel really old or what. I just realized that most of the UConn students of today either weren't born or were in diapers when that G'Town game was played. They think Dove is Jonathan Mandeldove.

Yes, I was at the Gtown game in 1990 and last night's game. The GTOWN crowd wins by a hair. I do feel old typing thisout.

.-.
I've only been going to games for 7 years, but that Texas game and Villanova in 2006 were the loudest crowds I've ever been a part of.

A couple of those Big Red cheers tonight were thunderous though! Gotta love how awesome Big Red's chant is, and how much the cheer squad chant sucks. (sorry I know I always mention that, but I can't resist!)

Agreed about lameness.

in the past, the student section used to chant for Red, preceding his cheer. It was awesome.

I do this by myself, now.

Not even close. GTown game strangers were high fiving each other in the hallways after the game.

I was at the game and last night was one of the best crowds in some time. My throat hurt and voice was shot by the end of the game. In fact it wasn't until I was walking out of the XL that I realize my voice was at about 20%. That tells you something about how loud it was in there when you don't even realize your voice box is all but torn up until you get outside.

I too was at the GU game back in the day and ditto, that crowd was among the best ever. Not only was my voice shot in that game, but also my ears. I can remember walking out of the HCC and my ears were ringing for quite some time afterwards. Wasn't the SU and SJU games at HCC that year? Those crowds were great as well.

This crowd reminded me of a ND game I was at a few years ago as well as a Big Each conference clinching game against Pitt back in the 90s. I have no idea what years those were, but the crowd was similar to last night.

Over the past couple years, I have all but given up that we'd ever hear a crowd like last night in the XL. Consider that this spoiled fan base is coming off NC #3, I'm pleasantly surprised that in addition to the students the suits and just about everyone were up on their feet with about 6 minutes to go, cheering like nutcases.

The live experience the past couple seasons has made me wonder if it was really that much better watching the game live over watching it on my HD TV with the frig full of food and drink a few steps away. Last night reminded me how mind blowing it can be watching the game live with thousands of other screaming fans. Just an A+ experience. I hope the team continues to give the fans something to cheer about and the fans likewise do their part in picking up the team. Sometimes the fans can be simply reactive to the team doing something spectacular. Last night was something special because the team did something that got the fans to realize that they could make a difference and the cheering wasn't simply reactionary but had an element of cheering this team up to and across the finish line. You could tell the crowd noise not only inspired the team, but also got into the heads of the WVU players. They went from looking confident to scared, and part of that was due to the crowd noise.

Cuse, yes, was only a few days apart from Georgetown game.

St Johns, no, that was opening night of Gampel Pavilion, with Harry A., himself, introduced at halftime.

also depends on the ranking in the polls, whats at stake etc. this was basically a REGULAR game that was LOUD

That's the one I always think of when we're discussing loudest ever. I don't understand how any game could be louder than that game was. All of Gampel were students

you don't understand because, well you just dont understand. UConn fans in 1990 had just suffered through 10 lean years - 5 losing seasons and 5 NITs. They were ravenous beasts who hadn't been fed since 1979 and a chance to knock off Gtown and the Cuse had them ready to kill. Those 1990 crowds were ferocious. They wanted blood. And dammit, they got it

well put.

1990 Dream Team. Back to back "Big Monday" wins over GTown and Cuse. Both were #1 coming into HCC. 2 huge wins that started an unbelievable 20+ year run. Never sat down, and couldn't even hear my wife who was sitting next to me.

The Cuse game at the HCC in Jan of 1990 was a Monday night ESPN game. Beating them and the Hoyas back to back was like a dream back then. Then the tesam did it again in the BET which had never been done by any BE team.

Alonzo Mourning was yapping at Henefeld while lining up for a foul shot. Dove just ignored him and was preparing to try to box him out. A minute or two later Henefeld hit a 3 from the top of the key to help secure the win. An amazing night. Gtown was #2 but #1 had just lost and the Hoyas were poised to take over the top spot. John Thompson with his towel was pacing the sidelines. JC was still in his 40's and coaching his brains out. Uconn won the 88 NIT, then had a step backwards in 89. In 89-90 they lost their first two Big East games (including a 30 point loss to St Johns)and it looked like it was more of the same. Syracuse came in on a Wednesday and Gtown came to town on Saturday. Wish I could relive that game.

I was under the impression we were discussing games at the HCC.

Gampel games should have their own category.

I was just checking out the boxscores for the 89/90 season. In the Cuse game at the HCC, UConn had an amazing 18 assists on 23 FG. The Cuse game WAS on a Monday night. We also got outrebounded by double digits in both those games.

I was a young kid during the dream season but growing up my parents would constantly tell me tales of "The Georgetown Game." The closest HCC experience I had was one a few others mentioned, UConn vs Kansas in 1997. When our young team (minus King and Moore) went up by double figures the whole place was just roaring.

Aside from being loud as hell, that was easily the best UConn loss (if there's such a thing) that I've attended. Looking back you could argue it was Rip's breakout game -- his first really great performance against a tough opponent on national television.

One thing is for sure, it was one of the most proacive crowds I've been a part of. You could feel that the crowd wanted the team to know that they were behind them.

I was at that Cuse game. God, it was beautiful. I will always remember JC accosting the refs at halftime. We got jobbed in the first half, not so much in the second. For pure decibel level though, I haven't experienced anything topping the 2 NCAA games that year when we put a run on BU in the second half and then opened the Cal game with a huge run.

In general Gampel is a far better venue. But nothing matches the primal energy of the Civic Center when the crowd is really, really jacked.

interesting historical perspective - the Syracuse games on 1/15/90 and Georgetown on 1/20/90 were followed by the last game at the Field House vs. Central on 1/24/90 and the opening of Gampel vs. SJU on 1/27/90.

Gampel games should have their own category.

If that's the case then, yes, my comment doesn't belong in this thread. I welcome all memories of HCC games. Now if we turn to Gampel.....
