According to reports, Matt Garza is about to be traded to Texas for a couple of prospects...the main one being Mike Olt. The Cubs were close to picking up Olt last year for a very similar trade, until Garza ended up getting injured.
This is a great trade for Olt. His value at 3B is so high, but he was not going to ever see 3B in Texas with Beltre signed to a long term deal. This will allow him to go to a team that has a huge hole at 3B and an organization that will have the patience to let him develop at the MLB level. Olt has struggled this year, but hopefully the change will re-ignite his year.
Not only is this a great deal in the short term for Olt, but it is also potentially a great deal for the future as well. Chicago has put together a great core of young players who should be coming up to the big leagues in the next couple of years and be a real contender again. They need to pick up some young pitching to go along with the great offense they are putting together...but I am guessing they can try to get there via free agency as they should have plenty of money to spend being a major market team and getting some key contracts off of the books soon (ie Alfonso Soriano).
This potential lineup in a couple of years is very impressive if the players develop as they are expected to over the next two years:
Albert Almora (CF)
Starlin Castro (SS)
Anthony Rizzo (1B)
Kris Bryant (RF)
Mike Olt (3B)
Jorge Soler (LF)
Wellington Castillo (C)
Javier Baez (2B)
That is a potentially killer lineup!
