In the opinion of the NCAA selection committee they were. Big East would routinely get more teams into the tournament than other conferences.

For the seasons 2008-2009 through 2010-2011 combined, the Big East sent more teams to the NCAA tournament than any conference in the country; more than the SEC, more than the Big 12 and more than the ACC.

In the 2012-2013 season, UConn's last season in the Big East, 8 teams from the Big East made the NCAA tournament. Three of those Big East teams -- UConn, Louisville and Notre Dame -- made the Final Four. As we know, UConn beat Notre Dame in the semi-finals and won the National Championship by beating Louisville in the final game.

Went through wiki, NCAA Women's Tourney from 2000 to 2014. Back in 2000 the SEC and Big 12 both with 6 bids. In 2003 the Big East had 7 bids along with the SEC...and for the most part the Big East never looked back until the split around 2013/14. Have captured a partial spreadsheet I compiled with data sorted # of Bids/ Conf and Year. More to spreadsheet but this will give a good indication how the "old Big East" came to be only to be dismantled.

To me, here’s my preliminary list
PAC-12 with 7 teams
ACC 6
SEC 5
Big12 5
Big10 4
That’s 27 bids, 22 at large. Add in the other 27 automatic bids for the other conferences, that means 15 at large bids for schools like BYU, Buffalo, Butler, DePaul, UCF which I would much rather see than LSU, Clemson, UNCheat.

Reduced the font size and captured more of the spreadsheet. Captured all Conferences with 6 bids from 2000 to 2013/14. The Pac-10 (at that time) with 6 bids in 2006.

I think it was 2011 when the Big East sent 9 teams to the tournament, and
and they all won their first round games. I don't think any conference has
come close to going 9-0 in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
