Not anything like Clingan's level in terms of production or all around game but he's someone to keep tabs on. Just going off of short clips he's just now growing into his body and looks way less awkward than he used to. He's pretty huge and moves really well getting down the court and gets up quick for finishes. Still just 16 and I think it's safe to say he will get a lot better.

I have heard from people close to the Stamford High program that this kid’s improvement arc has been significant, and that he has a tremendous work ethic. I’m going to get to a few games in the next month and will share thoughts.

Same here. I’m a close drive to a few FCIAC schools, so I’ll check him out. Thanks for posting @superjohn

He was listed at 6'10 last season and is now listed at 7'0 265 lbs. His high school team isn't all that good, they're just 3-3 now. Just based on clips he looks a lot more fluid now than he did last season or even AAU where he plays for the NY Lightning (good program) averaged 7.5 pts, 5 rbs, 1.5 blocks in EYBL. There's a lot to work with there if he gets good coaching.

7 footer at age 16 and is already 265 lbs?

Do you make a point to wear the UConn swag when you go?
Locally? Not since Rash Jones was at Stamford (Trinity) Catholic. Didn’t wear any UConn gear to Austrie’s high school games because everyone assumed he was heading to UMass. And Dave McClure was always a Duke lean. Other than a few MAAC/NEC/AE D1 signees, and a handful of D2 and D3 players, Connecticut’s now-second-largest city has produced very little basketball talent in the last 25 years, and it’s a total head scratcher to me. Stamford isn’t lacrosse, hockey and football crazed like our three immediate bordering neighbors to the west and east.

I heard about him for the first time last night. His mother doesn’t want him to come here from words of a mutual friend.

For those that saw Drummond growing up in CT, how does this player compare (high school speaking)?

Nothing like him, Drummond was an athletic phenom of a big man.

This is a huge kid who was awkward and has kept growing and now isn't all that awkward. It seems like he's now just realizing he can be very good and college coaches are noticing. I'm basing this off of just watching some of him in an AAU game from this summer and his early clips this year in high school compared to his clips from last year in high school and what the article says about him.

Everyone knew about Drummond as a junior in high school, he was #1 or #2 in his class. This kid has never been ranked anywhere. He seems like the awkward kid with some size who is now really big and not awkward. People are just now noticing he's 7'0 265 lbs, runs the court well, and has good touch. He's also pretty young for a junior.

Why would she want her son to stay local, where she can catch all his games playing for the best program in the country?

I remember going to see James Akinjo in the east bay when he was still committed to UConn. I was wearing a UConn 1/4 zip in the front row and I'm pretty sure people thought I was affiliated with the program.

Maybe she wants him to try a different school as she went to UConn.

That’s a shame. While the UConn brand was an afterthought with the run-down North Stamford campus decades ago, the new-ish downtown campus and its ever-expanding, modern and visible dorms - plus UConn’s partnerships with high-profile companies - the brand is probably more in the local consciousness in this part of the state than it has ever been in my lifetime.

Grew up in Norwalk and went to McMahon. Nice to see the old gym in the OP. Lived in the Strawberry Hill apartments next to Stamford High just after getting married and took in quite a few games - nice to also see that old gym! I agree with the poster who is a surprised as I am about how poorly Stamford athletics has done over the last decade or so. I grew up in the Calvin Murphy era and was at McMahon when Bobby V and Rippowam beat us in the state finals in baseball. Thanks for the updates on this kid I am already a big fan.

Watched him play against New Fairfield a few weeks ago. He's big, but he's not 7'... yet. He could still grow for sure. And definitely moved better than I'd have expected a tall kid in high school to. Not all arms and legs going in different directions.
